Default RIP 003 + Mbox 2 Family

Avid has posted this notice on the blog.......

"Effective 31 March 2011, Avid will discontinue the 003 family products. This includes all 003 Factory, 003 Rack Factory and 003 Rack+ Factory systems. Also effective 31 March 2011, Avid will discontinue Mbox 2 Family Products. This includes all Mbox 2, Mbox 2 Mini, Mbox 2 Pro and Mbox Micro systems."

Will it also include support?

Might be a good time to buy the soon to be discontinued products at a reduced price!

This was expected for a loooooong time.

With all ASIO interfaces now enabled who even want an 004?

Discontinuing sales and discontinuing support are two different matters. I wonder how far into the update/upgrade cycle they'll continue to support these interfaces. Are we going to get a 9.1 out of them or be jettisoned at 9.03. I don't really care - 9 did it for me. But maybe going forward, features like track folders and freeze will force me into a new interface. It will be interesting to see if/what they fill the hole between the MBox 3 series and HD Native. It's a pretty rough playing field out there. On Board effects are pretty hot these days.

Seems to be what people are overlooking.
PT9 has reshaped the Avid product line requirements dramatically.

It won't surprise me if they instead release a thunderbolt interface. I don't expect HD to go thunderbolt for another year or two, and avid did help test thunderbolt alot. So probably an omni looking interface introducing a thunderbolt io ports opposed to FireWire. Time will tell.
