Default Calculating Video offset hdmi external monitor

hey guys,

usually when i work a broadcast promo session out of my laptop at home , I view QT out of my laptop screen and have my video offset at 3 quarter frames.

Now i have to work in a slightly modified setup where client needs to be able to look at QT from an HDMI connected external monitor, how do I calculate video offset?

thanks

In addition to the post guys "stroke" material, there is a link on the site that Buccanears linked to titled "Ye Olde Radio Museum".

Here is the direct link: http://www.pharoahaudio.com/yeolderadiomuseum.html

I haven't had a chance to read more than just a tiny bit of it, but it details the restoration of several old radios.

Since my voice probably came through some of them back in my "radio days" (just kidding...I'm not that old) I found even the tiny bit I read absolutely fascinating...

slightly off tangent but just for reference (ha) - when making 2 pops in the UK we are advised to make them 2 frames long so that they survive the stasdards conversion process goping across the pond.

food for thought

cheers

Visually set your offset to the dot [snip] So set your video offset accordingly until the tone and the dot align up perfectly. Works pretty damn good.
I agree that you can do pretty well visually, but when the offset is constantly changing (as QuickTimes are often prone to do) your perception becomes much less objective and reliable. I am not a salesman talking, I am an experienced post audio guy. Yes, I have a stake in Syncheck but I am a post audio pro first, second, and third. I want to keep our work in sync. There are commonly accepted standards for sync just as there are formal standards for loudness, peak levels, room playback levels, and so on. We should be able to know, and show, that we can and do meet them. Saying "the 2 pop looks in sync to me" doesn't quite make it. My opinion of course.

You'll never know for sure w/o the Syncheck box.

Start spotting ADR or doing intense sound design and a syncheck becomes INDISPENSABLE... I also have specifically worked with clients who by name asked if the displays were calibrated with a syncheck as part of technical requirements.

Syncheck is an indispensable tool. Couldn't live without it. We all have different perception of what is or isn't sync. With Syncheck, there is no guessing.

What I am having problems with is that the rest of the world has 2 pops, whereas here in OZ we have 2 pips.
