PT 2020 Whats Up With The Crazy CPU Spikes?

Sessions that ran around 60% in 2019.6 cause immediate cpu spikes before playback can even start. I've tried 2020.3 and also .5 (2020.5 btw crashed every time I closed a session, but thats another issue). Anyone else experiencing this? I can't even use it and had to go back to 2019.6. Not a huge deal but I would like to use it since I'm paying for it :)


I run a super clean system, plugins up to date. Mojave 10.14.6 All the usual things...It's a older iMac and I push it pretty hard but it gets the job done.

I'm not a Mac expert, but I suspect its that you are trying to use the newest PT on a slightly older OSX. You might need to either upgrade OSX or downgrade PT(downgrading PT is probably best on an older Mac)

do you use VIs? and if yes which ones?

I'm sure you've checked this but each new install resets your buffer settings.

I'e been caught off guard by that.

Really... that totally could have been it. I'm on 1024 since I'm a mixer and it never ever changes (by me at least). I might have to re-install it just to check that thanks!

No VI's. They are just mix sessions. One session is only Waves V11 plugins so there are no 3rd party esoteric things causing it.

What's strange if that is the case, is that after re-installing 2019.6 my buffer is still at 1024. I'll try 2020.3 again today and double check this.

It probably depends on your preferences. Maybe it doesn't anymore.

So after re-installing 2020.3 again and double checking the buffer I can report it's not that. And it did stay at 1024 after installing. De-activating every plugin in the session and re-activating them one by one does not show any strange jumps and just leads me to believe that it simply just does not run as efficient as 2019.6
