Re: Soundproof Doors
A double door is probably your best solution. the most important factor is that there is air space between the two doors, and that none of the hard surfaces of the two doors touch (vibrations travel and pass most easily through hard materials which are touching). Most studios use this type of setup...open the door from the outside and there is a second door into the live room.
You should also use solid doors (not hollow) and try to make them as sealed as possible. You can also tack some sheetrock to them which will also help absorb sound (different types of materials absorb sound differently, so the sheet rock can absorb frequencies that pass thru the wood). There is a very cheap book (like 7 bucks) that you can get at amazon.com which outlines lots of basic construction concepts for home studios. It's called "Basic Home Studio Design", by Paul White. Good luck,

Re: Soundproof Doors
thanks for all the suggestions. I like alot of the ideas. All I'm trying to do is turn my closet into a vocal booth, so I don't know if I can do the double door. And I suppose I don't need is COMPLETELY soundproof, but I do have an a/c unit sitting right next to the closet, so I'm really trying to stop that sound from seeping in. Anyone know of a place that has doors with window in it.. like ones they use in studios?

Re: Soundproof Doors
I used pre-hung exterior doors with windows from Home Depot. Very effective. Very easy to install. I use 2 in the sound lock between the CR and the Live room, and one between the CR and the Vocal booth. They work excellently.
You can get them with 1/2 windows or whole windows, and paint them anything you like.... |

Soundproof Doors
I went to www.industrialacoustics.com and found that a soundproof door would cost $6000. That's a bit steep for me.. anyone know where I can find a door with a window in it for cheaper?

Re: Soundproof Doors
Consider a 1/2 inch glass shower door. My shower is one of those all glass type and it's more sound proof then my studio. Somethings wrong with this picture. But I would consider calling a glass company. It's still going to be a grand! Talk about showing off your studio!!

Re: Soundproof Doors
how about 2 double glazed sliding patio doors - works well for me. Easy to find second hand too - though they'll probably be in brown...

Re: Soundproof Doors
Soundproof?
That might be a little bit too much to ask of a door, which is why the steep price of the unit you looked at. I'm putting two metal clad exterior doors at the sound-lock of the studio I'm building - that should get me a fair way down the road of noise abatement. One of the most important things that you can do at the door is make it as air tight as possible, which is the reason for the exterior doors, not to mention the metal clad. The thicker the better. Good luck on your quest! |

Re: Soundproof Doors
6 grand?
a CCTV would be cheaper. Double doors with double glazing would be easier and cheaper.
