Default PT Free/AMIII install question

yeah, so i finally downloaded protools free, but am scared to install it. the setup tells me that i have outdated "Digidesign System Files." usually, i would just bite my lip and go through with it, but my system is very stable right now (as far as the AMIII is concerned) and don't want to mess anything up. will updating these files screw with the functionality of the AMII in other applications? please advise. thank you.

by the way, my setup is as follows:

Athlon 700 oc'd to 750
Via chipset (Abit ka7)
10g Fujitsu (sys)
20g Maxtor (app)
20g Seagate Barracuda (audio)
20g WD (audio)
Matrox video
Digidesign Audiomedia III
Scsi card
etc, etc...
again, everything works like a charm (pretty much) including, logic, and acid.

Default Re: PT Free/AMIII install question

If you have an AMIII card then I would strongly recommend that you buy Pro Tools LE. I believe the upgrade is only $99.

Pro Tools FREE will work on the AMIII, but we do not recommend it. Pro Tools FREE uses MME wave drivers to talk to the AMII card, and these are very low-performance.

Pro Tools LE uses Digidesign's "Direct I/O" drivers which are much more robust and much higher performance.

There is a huge difference between Pro Tools FREE and Pro Tools LE, so if you've already got an AMIII card you'd be wise to try LE.

The old AMIII drivers that you are using were not plug-and-play and thus they were hard to install (and a bit temperamental as you suggest). The new drivers with Pro Tools LE are plug-and-play and are much easier to deal with.

thanks, but i may just consider getting a new card and using logic. i'm already very used to the interface. i just wanted to see what the rest of the world was clamoring on about, but it seems that installing PT free wouldn't be worth it.
