Default mbox to 002 rack upgrade question

I've currently got an mbox, and I'm thinking about upgrading to a 002 rack. The main thing I'm wondering about it, is how the latency works.

I'm used to using the amplitube plugin on my mbox with the mix on about half so I don't have to deal with the horrible latency issue as much, but I can still hear the plugin.

I see the 002rack doesn't have the mix knob but it has low latency. But I've also heard that having low latency selected would turn off all plugins so that would mean the amplitube plugin is pointless.

Is there a way to dial in a mix of the plugin and dry signal on the 002 rack, like you can on the mbox? Or is the latency issue a whole lot better on the 002 rack to the point where you can use a plugin like amplitube without issues?

Thanks in advance!

the only way around monitoring latency with plug-ins is to buy a DSP based DAW such as Pro Tools TDM.

assuming this is not a viable option, i can say that my 002 system allows me to pull the buffer down to 64 samples most of the time without hiccups. 128 samples is pretty good too but some people notice it, me for one but i'm a fussy little biatch.

you are correct in assuming that LLM bypasses plug-ins on any record enabled tracks assigned to outputs 1-2.

BTW, you really should check out Native Instruments Guitar Rig.

Thanks Madrock,

So does that mean you're using guitar rig with the 64 samples latency and it's okay?

usually ok. occasionally i have to set it to 128. of course the number of other plug-ins in the session and your system sepcs will influence your results.

You can turn off the low latency setting and get good results at 64 or 128 samples with a plug-in. Which I do sometimes.

But when I utilize my outboard mixer, I can achieve 100% zero latancy. If you have outboard effects and a mixer, thats a nice option too.

this might be a workaround. When you create the audio track for recording your guitar, create an aux track (stereo or mono-same as your guitar track). Insert Guitar Rig on the aux track and mute the audio track. This should allow you to record in Low-Latency mode while you listen to the aux track with GR processing. Once your guitar is all recorded, you can move the GR insert to the audio track and lose the aux(unless you have more tracks to record). I like to buss my GR processed track to a new audio track and once that is recorded, I disable the original as GR is a resource hog.

thanks guys!

Well it sounds like its workable. The main thing I wanted know before upgrading is that I could at least get the same (or better) latency when using amplitube out of the 002 rack. I mean it would make sense for the 002 rack to be a lot better than the mbox since it costs more!
