Default Pro Tools 12.8 CPU Spike

Hi,
this is my system:
IMac 2017 i7 quad 4,2GHz
32 GB Ram
OSX Sierra 10.12.5

Antelope Orion 32 plus (thunbderbolt)
Uad Satellite Octo Thunderbolt

Pro Tools 12.8

All software and drivers are all update.

I use avid, slate digital and uad plugins.

With many sessions, also with only 5/6 tracks, i notice cpu spikes during the recording at 64 sample buffer. Sometimes also i had the cpu error ae 9173.
But when i play the project the cpu stay at around 10%.

What could be the problem?
Thanks a lot
Luca

Hi, you don't say what your system drive is, SSD, Fusion Drive, HDD or PCI Flash.

Also, are you recording to an external drive(audio & sessions)or to the internal system drive, are just working with audio or are you using MIDI with VI's?

We just need a little more info on your system and how you work to help find he problem

Hi,
my iMac has a 512Gb SSD and i'm recording on an external HDD seagate barracuda 7200 64MB in a startech usb 3.1 box.
The problem is with and without virtual instruments.

Have you tried trashing the preferences? Also may be one of your plug ins (is it only happening during record of audio?) Hold down "Shift" when launching the session, this will dis-able the plug ins, if this solves the problem switch 1 plug at a time back on until the problem occurs, you then at least know which one is the culprit - I'd start with the Slate ones, they've been know to be problematic.

Also, 64 is a fairly low buffer setting and could also be problematic if you're trying to record a lot of tracks at once... you mention 5 or 6 causing issue, low buffer and heavy cpu load plugs can cause cpu o/l problems, again - if you can - de-actvate you plugs while recording and see what happens.

I'll try trashing the preferences.
The problem occurs also with only one track in recording mode and 5/6 tracks in the Project.

Good thinking That computer shouldn't spike if setup correctly. You have done all optimizations and turned off virus protection and made sure all your plugins, even the ones you dont use are up to date as a bad plugin can cause these errors.

hi, does this still happen if you hold Shift (deactivate plugins for session) while opening your Session ... NOT while opening pro tools ... just holding Shift while opening the session ..

thinking is that it is a plugin that is giving you trouble ..

next would be to remove the UAD TB and see if you still see this ..

up to date Orion Drivers ?? up to date UAD Drivers ??

just thinking out loud ... time to eliminate some things one at a time .. right !!!

cheers john

I have no antivirus.
All optimizations done: optimize energy saver, turn off wifi, disable file vault protection, disable automatic update.
Antelope orion 32 driver up to date
UAD up to date
Slate digital plugin up to date.
Vienna ensemble up to date.
I don't have installed any other plugin.
Some days ago i tried a big test session with 128 tracks with a lot of plugs in the project and 32 tracks in recording (44.100 24 bit 64 buffer size) and all is ok (cpu at 50/60% but stable).
After some days (nothing has changed) i have this problems in real session with at least 10 tracks in the project and only one in recording.
I notice that slate reverb is really a problem (the track i'm recording has this reverb on an aux track) but i think also other plugs have some problems. Next days i'll try:
- recording in the system sad drive.
- trying recording without 3rd party plugs.

But to be honest i came from pro tools hd2 that is really stable with any kind of plugs and i thought that with a good imac i could be able to record without latency and without any problems
