Unhappy Scrolling kills the audio. On everything. Ever.

Hi guys, been away a while... hope everyone is well.

I have a SERIOUS issue with my (updated) system. Now that its been certified, I finally took the jump from XP SP3 to Win 7 64-bit SP1 running PT LE 8.0.5. I have a 002R, and even updating to the latest drivers from AVID hasn't helped.

I followed all proper install instructions, and everything installed happily on my stupidly fast new SSD. I have also upgraded my graphics card to handle the load of 7 (see Sandra), although this problem existed with the old one.

The problem I am getting is making PT unusable. If I scroll in either the mix or edit window, the audio simply cuts out. I can only rectify it by changing buffer sizes so that the audio drivers refresh (? Maybe? Could be talking rubbish here) and off we go again. As soon as the SLIGHTEST bit of scrolling happens, goodbye audio.

This also happens to a lesser extent if I'm listening to Spotify / Winamp / YouTube etc and scroll thru a webpage too quickly... the audio will pop and crackle before finally giving up.

When running PT, I make sure that my wireless network adapter is disabled, and all other OS and disk suggestions from AVID have been applied. I run NOTHING except PT when recording (recording would be the operative word if I could actually do some of it) so I really don't know what's up.

As you will see from the Sandra, its not as if my PC is incapable... it ran like a dream under XP, and that was when it could only see 3GB of RAM!

I'm flummoxed, and currently have two very serious projects on the go. Please Obiwans... you guys are my only hope!

Probably no ideas because this sounds very peculiar. I've not seen this problem before.

What mouse (and associated software/drivers) are you using. The first thing I'd try is using a different mouse.

Which drive do you record your sessions to?
I notice this drive in your Sandra; DESIGN DATA (E:) : 75GB (NTFS) @ SAMSUNG SP2004C (200GB, SATA300, 3.5", 7200rpm, 8MB Cache). Do you use this one for, and have you set it up in another program such as Adobe Effects as a dedicated drive?

Sounds like there is some sort of clash, maybe two programs fighting for some kind of resource consent.

I have to admit though, my thoughts are a shot in the dark .

Your video card is my what I suspect. The OS sets aside half of the video cards ram. So your OS is setting aside a gb of ram for it, then your OS is taking about a gb, leaving you w 2gb for everything else. That is very little. You need a 512mb vid card.

I would also look at making sure the drivers are updated for it. On the flip side I have deleted the nvidia drivers and let windows take care of the video drivers and it has resolved issues.

I could also see possible issues w the ssd drive and having firmware clashes with your older motherboard and bios.

8mb cache drives are terribly unstable and bad performance in comparison to newer 16-32mb cache drives.

It makes perfect sense to me oddly that this particular computer would run better w xp.

Hows the DVD connected ? Using the ITE IDE controller 2 x UltraDMA 133/100/66
?
IRQ conflict sounds most likely. On my P5K/EPU IDE is by a Marvell chipset - enable that and instant conflict trying to share IRQ17 with the TI Firewire.

What is this drive doing? Its 5400 rpm so its too slow for recording(and probably not good for a sample library either). The wifi should be disabled when running Pro Tools. In addition to the great advice already, I suggest updating your graphics driver from the nVidia website and maybe update or roll back the mouse driver too. While you're in Device Manager, look for any yellow flags and check which firewire driver you have going. There are usually 3 drivers on the system that you can select from(after hitting the option for "let me choose from a list"). Avid recommends the Legacy driver(which never works for me) but the TI Compliant driver is what works here
