Wouldn't that DigiMax kind of be the opposite of 1272s in terms of old school (the sh*t) vs. new school(unique sound).

I don't know about the Presonus Digimax, but the 2 channel and 8 channel mic pre (i think its the MP20-2 ch. and M80-8 ch) are class A with a beefy Jensen transformer. This is the classic "old school" setup!

Much different from the trend of transformerless (boring) gear we are sold these days.

Neve, API, Trident... all class A transformers.

I recently picked up a used 1272 for $1150. The new ones are $1350, and I couldn't find anyone willing to go under. I think Dallas Upton (vintech) set the bottom end price...

Anyway, I have TL audio tube pres (the no model name, early vintage 2 channel tube pre), a dual channel DW Fearn (absolutley lovely for everythig), and Sytek and Joe Meek and Bellari.

All are great and each have something that they shine the best on...

The TL's are good for general duty and less critical instruments. They warm and somewhat fat, somewhat smooth, but not very quick responsive (not great for drums or fast attack stuff), and a bit dark. I use them for extra vocal preamps, if I'm stuck tracking a bunch of singers. I like them on a Leslie organ, and things like blues harp amps and some guitar amps.

I like the Sytek for some acoustic instruments and drum overheads.

I love the Vintech 1227 as a Bass DI and guitar amps. Some vocals, depending on the song, but I tend to prefer the DW Fearn for most vocals because it is so amazing.

The DW Fearn works on just about everything, but that it better for the price...

Bottom line, the Vintech is a great piece. I'm getting a 1073 as soon as I recover from my last round of purchases (the never ending trek)...

Is anyone familiar with what the differeces are (other than cosmetic) between the Vintech 1272s and the Brent Averills? Essentially the same? Thanks Dean
