Kick drum eq? Help!

So far my problems have been limited to small unimportant things but im having a dilema when it comes down to making a kick drum sound tight and punchy like on most releases i hear on the radio etc. Im trying to find out how to get that awsome kick sound not a booming thump but a nice clean tight slightly fat kick
can anyone help?

Try a 421 up close to the skin where the kick hits,and an AKG D112 just outside the air hole.
Mix to taste, better if tracked seperately and mixed later. [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img]

if you´re refering to anything heavy i believe it´s mostly triggered samples.

Try adding some EQ in the 2-4Khz range to capture the snap of the hammer on the drum. If your mixer or plugin can do a frequency scan, try to find the sweet spot in that range. Also, don't over EQ the very low frequencies. A very small amout of reverb might help, but really not that much.

boost 60 - 80 hz, cut round about 250hz and to add a bit of click, boost around 5k.

Using a good "gate" like a drawmer can add a little extra punch.

Also a high compression ratio combined with the above can help a kick drum sit well in a mix without being overpowering and losing its dynamics.

An SM58 will do mic wise as long as the kick drum itself sounds good and its placement is right. But there are better mics for sound pressure level and frequency response, if you can be arsed reading up about it.
