BT Question on Drumming
If you were using Beat detective to quantize drums and came across a Snare or Tom Flam (like what you would hear on a Nirvana type fill) how would you fix it.
A. Would you use the first hit of the flam as the point of reference? B. Would you use the 2nd hit of the flam as the point of reference? C. Would you use the mid point between the 2 hits as the point of reference? Thanks

Re: BT Question on Drumming
Isn't a flam like a grace note on the musical side?? I would guess that the second hit would be a little louder which then I would reference the second hit keeping the flam before the beat. Does it sound strange it you reference the first hit? ( given that the first hit is softer ) Are the hits at the same velocity?
Probably doesn't help much but just my thoughts Chris |

Re: BT Question on Drumming
Both hits are the same velocity.
a grace note would be hit early but I don't know if this qualifies as a grace note. I'm hoping someone with more musical knowledge than I can give a definative answer. Unless flams are unconventional.

Re: BT Question on Drumming
Musically speaking, the second is supposed to be the one that's "on". The first is a grace note PREceeding the actual note. If you pick up a reduments book, it should say this.
That being said.... do what sounds best to you. -Tom

Re: BT Question on Drumming
tlester has it right. if you look at the notation for a flam it is a tiny little note (the grace note) tied to a "real" note.
When practicing my rudiments, I strive to get my grace notes in before the beat and the second note right on the beat. In actual performance, I suspect some drummers might shade the entire flam a tiny bit late and this might not sound bad especially if the flam is a punctuation at the end of a phrase. |

Re: BT Question on Drumming
Flams in a pop mx context typically lead up to the hit (beat).
BUT - as you know, there's ALWAYS a "but" in music - it's not a rule.
