PT 2021/2022 sessions interchangeable with PT 2018.4?
Hi guys,
I have been away from PT since 2018.4, just because it got to expensive for me to keep both versions (Ultimate and Vanilla) current over time. Now I'm tempted to take advantage of the Perpetual License upgrade Avid offer by 31st December 2021. Because I would even need to get a new computer to be able to run PT 2021/2022, I would upgrade only my 2018.4 Ultimate. Therefor I would have to use 2018.4 "Vanilla" on my mobile set up (MacBook Pro 2014, i7 Quad, 16GB Ram) further on. First and formost because I cannot afford another 2021 MacBook Pro. For my 2021/2022 Ultimate I would consider getting a MacMini M1 with macOS Big Sur. This system should work as far as I could find out. Now the initial question, would PT sessions be interchangeable between my mobile rig (MacBook Pro 2014, i7 Quad, 16GB Ram, macOS High Sierra 13.6, Pro Tools 2018.4) and my new set up (MacMini 2020, M1, 16GB Ram, macOS Big Sur, Pro Tools 2021/2022 Ultimate)? I have to admit I have forgotten how many versions backwards Pro Tools would be compatible with or how far it´s interchangeable finally. Please, give me a brief info about it. Thanks in advance, VRW |

Yes, sessions are compatible.
However, if you use some of the features that have been introduced after 2018.4 on the current system and then save it on the old system, the old system simply wipes away the features it has no clue.

That's good news basically. I guess I will have to give it some serious thought. Thanks again and happy holidays! |

Re: PT 2021/2022 sessions interchangeable with PT 2018.4?
Well, I have done it . I'm glad to be back on Pro Tools. Kinda missed it.
There's one question left though. I have found out that my 2014 MacBook Pro (for my mobile set up) still would be compatible with Pro Tools 2021.7. on macOS Mojave 10.14.6. I have bought the Perpetual License upgrade Avid offered by the end of December to upgrade my Perpetual License for 2018.4 Ultimate. I see I can download and run Pro Tools 2021.12 Ultimate now but what if I would want to use my mobile set up, my 2014 MacBook Pro in addition with a newer version of Pro Tools? So would it be possible to download and run Pro Tools 2021.7 as well with the upgraded Perpetual License I got in December 2021? Or does it not allow me using any earlier versions of Pro Tools before December 2021 (when I still have had no valid license)? It would be important for me to know if I could run 2021.7 with my upgraded Perpetual License as well or if I can use it with current and future versions of Pro Tools only. Thanks, VRW |

Re: PT 2021/2022 sessions interchangeable with PT 2018.4?
I'm not shure if I'm clear on all the details, VRW, but it's really quite easy;
You have a perpetual license on your iLok. Any computer with a PT10 or later installed will recognise the license. (Subscription is different. It'll not let you run old versions.) The license decides what features are available, if it's ultimate or vanilla, the PT install is not specific to that. The OS/PT versions compatibility is a different question. You'll have to check the compatibility grid on avid support pages.

I have checked the compatibility in regards to my systems and to the different versions of Pro Tools already. I was not sure if I could run any prior version of Pro Tools/Ultimate with my newly bought Upgrade for my Perpetual License from 2018. Just because I had no valid PT license for any versions of PT between April 2018 and Dec 2021. So I thought I´d rather ask. Cheers. |
