There's three models I really like that are under $500.

The first is what I use since my set-up needs to be fairly portable. These are the M-Audio BX5 monitors. They sound great for their size and are extremely portable if you need them to be. I believe they run about $300.

The other sets are a bit larger and less portable, but sound amazing for the price. The first is the M-Audio BX8. I haven't had too much experience with them, but from what I've heard, they're great. The other pair is the Behringer Truth monitors. A buddy of mine just got a pair for $400 new I think. They rival systems that are upwards of $1000. If size isn't an issue and you won't be moving your monitors to different locations too often, check these out. I'm thinking about picking up a pair of them.

I actually like the smaller behringers(2030A) but also look at the KRK Rokit 8 at under $400 a pair.

Hi if you can live with a 65Hz low end then try the tannoy reveals.

the are great, crisp and transparent.

id save up more money for better monitors. also id tune the room a lil bit. but you could get a sub and make some bass traps for your studio.

I just got a pair of the truth monitors and they sound great, I think i paid like 350 or so. I also have a pair of ns 10`s and for the money i would go with the truth.

For under $500... go with the Behringer Truths... They do sound really good.

I checked out speakers for a long time with a buddy of mine who knows a lot about monitors and studios in general. We both ended up getting the M-Audio BX5 for the money they're super great - The sounded every bit as good if not better than the $700+ speakers we evaluated. I have had mine now for about 4 months and I am pleased as can be... Really I have found no flaw with them.

good luck

Oh yeah I didn't get the sub at the time - still happy with the sound of these without it - they're punchy enough for me.

I use a pair of event TR8s and they are fantastic. Only paid $500. I thought they sounded a lot better then the truth monitors. Tuning your control room will help a lot.
