SKB Shock racks-- are they really rock solid?

I need to ship my equipment, and I would prefer to ship it all in my SKB Shock rack, and throw a FedEx label on the outside. Is this a completely stupid idea? Will the SKB really shock protect it through shipping?

Furthermore, are there any companies that handle fragile audio gear transportation? How do most people get their gear around the country (if you don't have a tour bus).

About 5 years ago I had a couple DA-88s in a 8-space SKB shock rack, and they tore out the rack screws on a 3-hour flight. Maybe they were too heavy, but, that's my 2 cents. Good luck!

I love my SKB racks, but the aluminum rack rails bend too easy for rough handling.

I have read about freight companies that specialize in fragile freight. They even have special shocks and sprngs on their trailers.

Cheap shock racks are dangerous because they appear to have the capabilities of a real shock mounted rack when they actually offer less protection than a properly designed cardboard carton. They do look cool.

Some years back, I used shock racks from a Michigan company. The name escapes me. They supplied the military. Rails on both front and back- mounted on large rubber grommets.

They worked great for the original Emax HD. The drive never failed.

If you're doing demos, you can mount a surge protector on the back rails. Also, we used high density foam to sandwhich the units prior to flying.

Also, keep your AC cords short and connected during transport. Often, this type of gear is plugged in, as a security measure.

Remember fragile means "throw underhand"
