Default MBox Pro Problem

All of a sudden my Mbox is causing me major problems, there is a small crackling noise every couple of seconds followed by 2 of the Peak Lcd lighting up, (the Aux in and input 2), when i try to play the song constant drop out occurs and then catch up.
Do you think my mbox is on the way out; It feels as if it is also a communication problem as well, i always disconnect the firewire cable at the end of every session and maybe the cable might be faulty.
The last thing i was working on yesterday (and everything seemed fine) was Elastic Audio.
It is also not working properly when i try to play i tunes via the mbox.

What is the life expectancy of these units? My Digi 002 has recently also died on me after a couple of years.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ptools 8.0, Macpro 2x2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel, 8 gig Memory, Version10.5.8

Are you shutting down before you disconnect the firewire cable? If the system is powered on, you may have burned out the firewire port on the Mbox, or the computer or both as hot-patching on Macs is a really bad idea. For those considering this, just leave the Mbox attached all the time. In any case, do try another cable as they can fail for no reason(referring to the cable that comes with the Mbox/002/003). I hope a cable fixes it for you Meanwhile, life expectancy is at least long enough for the interface to be made obsolete. The 002 units suffer from a well-known and documented issue with the power harness. Digi has been very good about replacements out of warranty to all registered owners(but often, a simple re-seating of the harness connections solves the problem).
