Default Connecting new hardware.

I have just purchased a new compressor and a new eq unit (both outboard). I have a 002 desk and a Mackie 1604 VLZ pro (which i use for the pre-amps). I basically would like to know which is the best way to conenct them up? I am currently thinking that I should use both of them on aux's on the 1604 and adjust the settings in real time before entering the DAW, but then I would also like to be able to make adjustments to audio once it's been recorded into the DAW in non real time. Anyone have any suggestinos please? Plus am I gonna incorporate loads of latency here?

Thanks

Hi,

Compressors (and EQ for that matter) are normally used on an insert. (I won't comment on 002 vs. Mackie preamps.) I'll assume you're using the 1604's direct outs to line-ins on the 002. If so, get some T/R/S insert cables and use the Mackies inserts for connecting the Compressor or EQ. You can lightly use the compressor to 'ride' vocals or punch up a bass or drum while tracking. The EQ can shape sounds--but mic placement, instrument set-up, etc. are where the sound originates...Need to fix something? Look there first. If your compressor has a 'sidechain' input, the EQ can be used for all sorts of neat tricks, though.
As far as mixing down, unless you've got some really sweet outboard gear--the Digi (and other) plug-ins are your best bet, by far. If you use the outboard gear in mixing, you will not only induce latency, but also suffer a needless DA/AD conversion. Likewise, your mixdown settings won't be (exactly) repeatable if you use the outboard gear.
