10.13.6 with 2018.7 ... best version ever!? Holy Sssh
Ok guys, I have to give you a good news, at least it seems so
I’ve spent an entire day installing osx versions and pt 2018, here are the results, unfortunately you just have my word, I didn’t do videos or stuff (didn’t have time, to many things to pay attention to avoid screwing things up) Setup was two identical usb 3 external hd (sorry, I only had them, so they surely affected the performances in a wrong way, but they were the same, so they null) I’ve installed Sierra 10.12.6 on one hd and High Sierra 10.13.2 (thanks to TNM) on the other... they seemed to work the same exactly the same I’ve loaded a mix I was working on in pt 10.3.10, using 256 of buffer and 96k sample rate No hiccups at all, pretty snappy, also graphics, the biggest problem was the hd (also because both the OS and PT were in the same hd, so pretty extreme situation)... not as snappy as using the internal apple ssd, I tried to start and stop very fast moving around the session to stress the system and sometimes I got the error “not enough fw bandwidth, even though is usb3 xD)... but very workable, and I was impressed by graphics, meters, were very fluid So I updated to 10.13.3... things remained the same as before No version could handle 128 buffer at 96k (I’m talking about a full mix here BTW, not too many plugs, no VI but automations and stuff, 64 tracks with a lot of cuts, fades, stretched stuff) And now it becomes funny xD I installed 10.13.6 combo update: - is the only one that handles 128 as it was 256 in the other versions, and can do 64, I mean you get the error, but I’m almost been able to do a full playback of the song from start to end - It seems to have a lower cpu usage, 5/10% less - It is the snappiest combo and everything is more fluid, steady... and I haven’t even tried it in an internal hd, I’m so curious to try it out in the internal ssd! And now you really wanna laugh xD So, in the end I booted Mavericks 10.9.3 with PT 10.3.10... At 256 of buffer it was unusable... I got 4 error because of cpu spikes in 30 seconds of playback AND IT WAS INSTALLED IN THE INTERNAL APPLE SSD So, that’s it, it is not a deep test, but those are the findings, then I don’t know if working with it daily it’ll go crazy or will have other problems... but so far, with 10.13.6... wow, seems reeeally solid and snappy... also 128 of buffer on a full mix when I had to keep 1024/2048 to work with it in pt 10!? Never been able to do that I thought 10 was the best version, but wow, this seems totally another level And guys, I’ve been pretty pissed off by avid in the past, I also wrote them some heavy words cause I was really pissed off So I don’t know way avid doesn’t support 13.6, maybe for some other reason, I don’t know, and I hope to not be there tomorrow moaning about how ****ty it is and how wrong I was, but man... this seems really on another level compared to 10 and much better than all the other OS I tried in this test |
