I really like the musicxp site. It has been very helpful for me.

I've used Black Viper's "super tweak" settings, and with a few exceptions it works fine for me,

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Running msconfig and looking at the startup tasks reveals a lot of programs which load at boot time and run in the background.

You can usually eliminate most of those and get a good speed jump.

I also, look in the BIOS and turn off anything I don't use. e.g. parallel, serial, floppy, power saving, on-board audio/modem (optional), unused busses (optional), usb (optional).

Of course have the latest hardware and OS firmware/driver updates starting with the motherboard and audio card.

Run a utility like Norton WinDoctor and Defragment regularly.

Put your swap file on a separate drive or partition to prevent your startup drive from becoming fragmented.

Those help me quite a bit.

Turn off the network card and anti-virus software when recording.

Do a search on the boards here for "XP Optimization" and you'll find a whole bunch of tweaks for digital audio.
