Default why crackling?

i have the problem, that it always starts crackling (sounds also like overmodulation) while playing after 6 min. running ProTools Free. I have a AMD 1,8 Ghz with WinME.
It doesn't depend on the sound file or sth. because if i close the file and open it again, it appears after 6 min. also again.

What can I do?

thank you in advance,
Marius

I had a similar problem with the Echo MIA card. Things would start out fine, but after awhile, even while sitting idle, random snaps and pops, sometimes runaway feedback.

See if you can pop in a cheap SB PCI 128 soundcard and see if that doesn't fix it... also visit the Yamaha 'site for any updated drivers.

Good idea to make sure you have disabled any background running applications like Virus checkers, System Restore, Automatic Update, Scheduled Tasks...

Have you gone through the optimization checklist for PTF? Like disabling CD and DVD auto-insert? That item 'polls' the CD and DVD decks every few seconds and distracts the CPU.

Be sure to visit the PTF compatability page Here. Check for chipset compatability issues (HP and some Vaio machines for example)...

Let us know if any of this helps, 'k?

I had the same problem. What i did to fix it was to de-frag my hard drive and the problem went away
