Default Protools 8 HD on a PPC Mac

I am thinking of installing PT 8 HD on my PPC mac. Does anyone else have this build and have you encountered problems?

if you have TDM UA plug ins you can kiss them good bye

if you are over 55 and near sighted you may have extreme difficulty with the new GUI as it is painfully difficult after a couple hours of use

other than that there is a world of new advancement until they phase your G5 our of the computer qualifieds list...the days of G5 they say are numbered.

the soft synths alone are worh the price of admission

i've been going into PT8 and recording a piano track to disk then importing that cool sounding grand into my 7.4 cs5 sessions with great results.

i purchased it.....we all will have to eventually

but i'm not using in on the clock with clients

i hope this is helpful.

This is because 8 will only recognize UAD 2 correct?

I have a G5 dual 2.7 & I'm quite happy running PT 8 on my system. Always make a backup of your system before upgrading. That way you have a backup in case something goes wrong.

Running great on a G5 Dual 2 here. Just ordered a Mac Pro though. The PPC's a bit long in the tooth for the RTAS that looms in all of our futures.

He's talking about the Universal Audio TDM plug-ins. These have been discontinued in 2006 or 2007, so no updates any more on these and they are PPC only.

You can use all those plugs and VIs in PT7.4!

Just copy them and they work.
Hope it helps,
Timothy

I installed 10.5/PT8 on new drive and run both 7.4 and 8 on Mac Pro's and G5's (PPC). I noticed that I can't copy/paste in PT's dialogs now on the G5 (I would usually copy the name of the bounce in case I had to stop, change, rebounce, and paste the name). There are some looping issues with Workspace (where a bar or two of whatever I audition will repeat until PT crashes), and the permissions on the Mac get way out-of-whack (from PT) much more often.

Other than that, it rules, and I won't use 7.4 if I don't have to. Having it on a 22" ACD and a 40" LCD TV rocks, and all the clients notice the playlist comp'ing, the VI's stuff (with notation!) and the color changes. Remarks from even the flashing-twelves clientele (you know, the ones that can't program a VCR?)

After 12 hours of staring, it is much easier on the eye than 7.4 (or 5.1 for that matter!)

Yes, I suppose I have drunk the kool-aid, and am a believer.

I am up and running with 8 and things are good so far. I am wondering how to run both protools 7.4 and protools 8 on the same drive. Do I just need the 7.4 installer or will this upset my licenses? How have other people done this?

I've got PT 8 on 2 PPC machines:

Dual 2.7. HD3 w/ D-Command
Dual 1.8, HD3 w/ C|24

If all Plug-Ins are up-to-date, and you've got at least 2GB RAM, you should be good to go.
