Default Correct Order to Power Up & Power Down Digi 002 Rack?

I got my Digi 002 Rack today, fired it up and it works great. Other than the initial turning on, which specified that the computer be turned off, is there a correct sequence to power up a laptop and the Digi 002 and then power them down? This is my first experience with Firewire. Can it just be plugged in hot when the laptop is already on like the Mbox can be, or should all connections be made before anything is powered on and then the Digi 002 and then the ibook?

What a wonderful piece of gear! Plugged in the ADA8000, set the clock in PT to internal and it works like a charm.

Thanks,
bilco

you can always turn on and off your digi002 rack unit on any given time whether your computer is on or off. os will just prompt you that it has lost communication with your digi002 when you disconnect or turn off the unit while protools or digicore is loaded.

Please just be aware of the energy saving features of your computer, putting to sleep your computer and drive will cause protools to crash or be slow.

regards,

JS

Would it be okay to leave the Digi002 permanantly switched to the on position and turn on all the gear simultaneously with a power strip? This would include a pair of KRK powered monitors.

Thanks,
bilco

I wouldn't recommend that dude. I turn everything off 1 at a time except my Mac. My power up is this:

1. Mac always on
2. KRKs
3. 002R
4. Glyph GT050Q
5. ADA8000

Powering off is:

1. ejecting Glyph from Finder
2. Glyph
3. ADA8000
4. 002R
5. KRKs

I figure it's better to let the capacitors in all the components release their stored power in succession instead doing it all at the same time.

Just my $.02.

Do your KRKs pop when the system is booting up when you turn them on first? With my Digi001 I had to turn them on last. If I turned them on and then booted up the G4 and Digi001 I would get a loud pop.

The reason digi advise you not to turn on the 002 when the mac is powered up, and belive me it does happen, is that there is a risk of frying your mac FW port. So the best practice is to turn on the external FW devices first and then your mac. Monitors should always be last on first off for obvious reasons.

Cheers

DIGI saved us from ourselves when they put the "auto mute" switch on the 002. Signal only goes to the monitors when this is off.

I always power up my External Hard drive, then My 003R, Then my Mac, to turn off eject the external then shut it down then shut down the Mac then the 003R.

The mute switch only works if you have your monitors connected to the monitor ouput on the Digi002R. I monitor through an Apogee Rosetta 800, which doesn't see that the 002R has the monitor outs muted. Also, when monitoring via the 002R outputs, I use the main outs and have them connected to a monitor controller (along with the Rosetta 800). The mute switch doesn't work on the 002R main outs either.

I see several say not to do this but I have done it for over 3 years without a hitch, both with my 002 and my new 003. I have an APC 800VA (UPS) plugged into the wall(best $120 I ever spent) and a rack power strip plugged into the UPS. I just hit a single switch to power up(my PC is set to boot on AC restore. Not sure if a MAC can do that). I am running (from the strip) my PC, 2 flat screens, 2 outboard preamps and firewire drives. I do have my Event SP8's plugged into the wall but I never get a pop on power up or down whether the Events are on or off. I highly recommend a UPS because if you are recording or bouncing and lose power, it can corrupt the session.
