Default PT10HD and S/L or Lion?

OK fellas..

What opinions have you formed so far about PT10HD with regard to OS?

Do you prefer 10.6.x or 10.7.x? Why?

I have to say.. I bought a new drive and installed 10.6.8 on it. I Installed PT10HD in about 10 minutes today and it fired right up and ran for ten minutes without a hiccup.. (I only have a basic install so far, no after-market plugs).

I went ahead and am d/l'ing Lion to give that a quick test.. (I love having images to choose from).

I think I'll be pushing my old 2.1 Mac Pro to run Lion but maybe it will be alright.

Thanks!

My personal experience with Lion on both HD and native systems has been very positive.
Lion is the way forward and the OS has some very nice features that come in handy when using pro tools or any other application for that matter. Some of them only make real sense when combined with a trackpad or magic trackpad ... which is why I've added a magic trackpad to my systems. The swipe functionality is gold !!!

If your mac is capable of running it ... lion 64 is the way to go imo. Definitely going to be more future proof at this point as well.

Thanks Chris! I'm not 100% that it will run 64 bit.. I keep hearing both ways. I guess I'll know in an hour or so when it finished d/l'ing. I'll push this old box as far as it will go though..

I have to say.. This M/P has been amazing when it comes to DAW. No matter what I've thrown at it, it installs and runs without issue the first time every time.. I've been so impressed with it that I would splash out on a new 12 core.. well, maybe.

10 installed in minutes, fired right up and after setting some prefs and restarting, went right to work. Very cool stuff. Though, in fairness, I'm just using it native atm through an 003. I've got my HD|N but haven't settled on a front-end.. (and it won't run without being attached to something). Had a chance to pick up a 192 locally pretty cheap but that just fell through.. off to plan B now I guess.

I'll install lion tonight and make an image, then PT and run some things through it.. if all goes well I'll stick all of my iLok plugs in and test again for a few days.. if that works, then I'll put in everything that needs manual authorization.. (I'm one of the few that would prefer everything on iLok) I've got my 9 hard drive sitting very close just in case..

I look forward to hearing from some more of you if you don't mind...

Chris, again, thanks!

Hi,

All macs from about 2008 will boot into 64 bit mode! If it defaults to 32 bit you can hold 6 and 4 when booting to boot into 64 bit kernel.

go to about this mac / more information / software / and see if it says 64 bit kernel extension "yes"

There is also a terminal command to keep the mac booting in 64 but kernel...

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64

From what i've read Lion is the best option for PT10. I guess 64 bit would be the best but for me some of my other items and apps don't work in 64 bit so its going to be 32 bit for now.

I have a Lion partition installed and ready to test PT10 when the demo is released.

Heya Chris #2... Thanks for that.. Unfortunately for me I have a 2.1, Early 2008 8 core 3ghz.. No boot into 64 bit kernel..

However, I'm typing from Lion as we speak and it seems really snappy in it's own right.

I've fired up PT and it seems to load OK.. I did however get a message saying that Lion had moved incompatible software to a folder.

When I opened the folder there were two files, both from PT..

1. DigidesignFireWireMidi.plugin
2. DigiDioMidiDriver.plugin

It's after midnight now so I'll probably wait until morning.. but I'll load up some old session and have a piddle with it tomorrow... Something with Omnisphere or some such to see how the midi acts. I've left the files in the 'incompatible' folder for now. If I have issues I'll just wipe the disk and install Lion then PT and see what happens.. Doubt it will be a problem though. I usually will not install software over another install like this, but I'm just testing anyways..

Thanks again!
