i installed the file from this site (got it from another thread)

Yeah... good luck if this works.
I've done that a hundred times with PT 9.0.5 then 9.0.6 and only way I could still use PT was to reinstall 9.0.2 ! (That's under Windows 7). Their last suggestion: I should try to update chipset on my BIOS !!... (I have the latest chipset) - That's the exact reason why I will not spend $300 on PT 10. Had the same issue with the demo. Under Mac OS X Snow Leopard, no such issue so far with 9.0.6 - funny enough when thinking this is the exact same machine, same BIOS... just dual-boot with Mac OS X and Win 7 x64.
