Default Phantom Power

I have a question about phantom power. Should you have your mic attacthed first then activate phantom power or the other way around? Or does it not even matter. I of course have levels down to aovid any pops or boom noises .
I just want to make sure if there is a procedure for using phantom power

Connect the mic first. Also, turn phantom off and let the mic sit for a minute or two to dissipate the energy.

+1

It's a good rule of thumb to always connect the cables, then power up.

A big one to look out for is when you are patching mic inputs on a patchbay (TRS style). If you patch while phantom power is on, it is very easy to send 48volts down the active wire when the tip of the plug brushes past the earth in the patch plug.
When you hear a mic become a speaker it can really bring a tear to your eye.

I wouldn't want a patchbay connected to a Mic. I've heard some people do this but sounds dangerous lol.

I've always prefered the mic ins to be on seperate XLR patchbays. Less room for error

Something you guys might want to check out...

In the SSL AWS 924 Manual (we all can dream!), they discuss a specific type of patch panel that can be used for mic lines.

I think that the jacks are "special" and are wired in a certain way so that there is no problem patching even with phantom power on.

You can download the manual on the SSL web site, and if you guys are able to figure out (or already know) anything else about this, please post it.

I would agree that XLR patch bays are the way to go for mics, but if the SSL thing is a viable alternative it would be good to know...

Just rockin'...what more is there?
