Default Best use for an older 867 G4

I just upgraded from an apple 867 to a Dual 1.8 G5. However my apple 867 is a kick butt machine. I would like some opinions on the best way to integrate my 867 with my G5. Is there anyway to work with Quicktime movies using both machines, Plugins, Etc?

If you were running Logic Pro 7, you could network the CPU power of both machines for plug-in processing, mixing, etc. I don't run Logic, but it's too bad Digi will never even think of using that sort of technology on little ol' PTLE. Three linked Dual 2.5GHz G5's would smoke an HD system at less than half the price...but we'l never see that.

If the 867 has a superdrive, you can use it to backup files, burn DVDs, etc. while you do "real" work on your G5. I recently moved to a G5 and my G4 Dual Ghz is still keeping busy with random tasks here and there.

that would actually cost a bit more than the HD2 system w/96 I/O + Massive pack that we just got. I'd rather have the HD, but having three G5's laying around would be a lotta fun too.

Don't forget that you've got to factor in your computer, too. In that scenario, three G5's would actually be two, since one would be the "master" G5 and the two others would be "CPU farm" G5's...just like you've got a computer running your HD2 system.

In that case, even at the current street price and with extra memory I'm hitting at about $6500 for what amounts to your HD2...and you paid at least another $1500 on the interface. If I drop down to the Dual 2Ghz and I'm nearing $5000, which would still bust up a nicely-equipped HD system. Not to mention that G5's won't soon become obsolete like HD cards are prone to do.

Don't get me wrong, if you handed me your HD system, I'd take it in a heartbeat...I'm just making the point that Digi could easily unleash PTLE and make it a beast.

They just never will, and for obvious reasons.

Email, cd burning, etc. are good uses.

ALso considering slaving the old machine to the new and using it as a dedicated softsynth to take some fo the heat off the main machine. THis might make sense the other way around.

Use the older mac as a midi sequencer, you can have it stream samples via Kontakt, Reason2. You would need a decent low lantency sound card. It would need to be sync'ed via midi, and set to chase PTLE.

I use this set up w/ Reason on a !Beige! G3/500 and PTLE 001 on a G2 1.25 MDD.
PTLE, Reason and an akai S3000XL(akai chases PTLE also) all hit a DA7 32 track digital mixer. And it rocks....

rock
