Post Strange Install Prob - PT mp on XP system

I'm having no luck in installing ProTools 8 on a brand new system. I'm experiencing some symptoms similar to that reported by a few LE users recently.

After a clean OS install, updating my Maudio 2496 drivers, & the iLok drivers, and Quicktime, I run the installer without any apparent problem. But when I launch protools the program hangs in launch, while appearing to be loading structure.dpm. But if I remove structure components from the plug-ins folder it will then hang on Xpand!.dpm, and if I then remove Xpand! components it will then hang on VariFi.dpm, and so on...If I rename the plug-ins folder plug-insX, and create an empty folder called plug-ins, a tactic suggested by tech support in a phone consultation, the program will hang as soon as it begins "loading Plug-Ins." I have uninstalled and reinstalled PT. I have reimaged my system disk from Ghost, installed all new up-to-date drivers and so forth, all to no avail. Any further tactics or strategies anyone might suggest would be appreciated.
Joel

Default Re: Strange Install Prob - PT mp on XP system

Addendum to above post: I noticed after posting that my Sandra report did not list my M-audio 2496 interface, which was because I didn't have same selected as the default sound device in windows. Having corrected that problem, and verifying that the M-audio device was working, I once again tried to launch PT8, with the same result as before, a hang while the program displayed a message to the effect that it was loading Structure.dpm.

I have work to do. I can't afford this.
Any suggestions as to further things to try would be appreciated.
Frankly, at this point, I'm considering this to be a serious PT8 bug.

regards,

Joel Grant Taylor

You might want check this tool: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...id=37991&eid=0.

What is the Tech Support Folder?
The Tech Support Folder contains various tools for troubleshooting common issues you may
encounter with your Pro Tools system.
1. The Tech Support Utility is an easy to use program that can help you solve many
common Pro Tools technical support issues, including:
• Error messages
• Strange behavior and performance problems in Pro Tools®
• Plug-in performance problems
• Input and output problems in Pro Tools
• Launch problems
• Random application closure problems
• Unwanted demo period authorization messages
• Problems related to incompatible plug-ins and a list of installed plug-ins (and their
versions)
Before running the Tech Support Utility, please read the Tech Support Utils Read Me.
2. The Troubleshooting Sessions folder contains Pro Tools session files for the following
Pro Tools LE® systems (Windows or Mac): 003®, 003 Rack, Digi 002®, Digi 002 Rack,
Mbox® 2, Mbox 2, and Mbox 2 Pro. (Please note that you may use the Mbox Output
session to test the Monitor Outputs on the Mbox 2 Mini). These sessions can be used to
troubleshoot the following situations:
• No input or output via S/PDIF connection
• No input or output via Optical (ADAT) connection
• No input or output via MIDI ports
• No audio out of monitor outputs
Before running any of the Troubleshooting Sessions, please read the Troubleshooting
Sessions document.

Ok. Thanks for the suggestion. I have run all of the options in the Tech Support Utility one after the other, testing Protools launch after each one. After running option 1 to remove plug-ins warnings the program hung on Xpand! instead of on Structure and this remained the case until I restored Structure in the advanced menu, after which it went back to hanging on Structure. Any other ideas, anyone? Digi? Is there any chance that SQA can look into this? Regards, Joel

It just hangs there. If it had given me an error message I'd be thrilled. I've taken the trouble of waiting for up to 15 minutes or more a few times too, just in case there was something going on that would eventually result in an action, but no such luck.

Have you tried removing all of your plugs from their folder and placing them in a temp folder created by you? What happens then?

Tom, in the initial post I discuss this strategy. What happens is that the launch hangs as soon as it gets to "loading Plug-Ins". Which is puzzling, it should just skip right over it...This makes me think the problem is occurring earlier, though that doesn't make sense to me....And to add insult to injury, if I reinstall ProTools, installing only the essential protools files, it hangs on ElasticAudio.dpm.
Does this give you any ideas?
Sometimes in this process its seemed to me that everything is broken, and that maybe I just have a really defective DVD, but I know that doesn't make much sense.
best regards,

Joel
