Default File Formats Pro Tools DOES NOT import ahhh...

For the industry standard DAW, in the year 2024, Pro Tools still doesn't import various file formats, such as FLAC, long supported by other DAWs like Adobe Audition or Studio One Pro etc. Please AVID make this simple update and be competitive with other DAWS.

For example:

Studio One imports:

WAV (BWF and RF64)
AIFF
CAF (Core Audio Format - macOS only)
RAW (uncompressed PCM audio files)
Ogg Vorbis
FLAC
MP3 (with additional setup in Preferences)
REX Loops
Apple Loops (CAF only in macOS)
Standard MIDI Files (SMFs)
Studio One's Audio Loops and Music Loops
OpenTL (.tl) Projects
Steinberg Cubase Track Archives (.xml)
Steinberg Sequel Projects (.steinberg-project)
Kristal Audio Engine Projects (.kristal)
Advanced Authoring Format (.aaf)

File Formats Pro Tools imports:

WAV
AIFF
MP3
MXF (OP-Atom)
AAF
OMF
QuickTime
SDI and SDII

Also M4A just shows up as a blank waveform if you drop it in to a session. It must be imported from the import audio dialog. Not that anyone needs to use that format.

PT 7 could import REX files. I remember messing with them back in 2006-ish. The Processing tab of PT Preferences still has options for REX file import, so it must still be able to, I guess. I didn't know they were still a thing.

Hi Justin,

I sent this over to the PT design team.... I know many are at NAMM so they wont see this for a week or so.... but at least they will see it ultimately....

Not sure what is on the roadmap but at least they know now it is wanted.

While you’re at it, maybe return to being able to “rip” CD audio tracks within Pro Tools like it used to? Some of us still need to do that occasionally.

Is that still really a thing last computer I bought with optical drive was a 2010 Mac Mini, which just predates ThunderBolt

(after topping memory and swapping spinner to SSD, it still serves as a media server in summer cottage. probably using it once a year)

Why yes, it is, which is why I posted it! I rarely use the optical drive either, but do have to rip a track from a CD from time to time, which I can do with any number of 3rd party apps, but it’s clunky. And most of those apps seem to feel a need to create 3 or 4 folders within folders.
I also prefer a CD to an mp3 on a flash drive for the ol’ “car test.” Old school? Maybe, but the disc always sounds better.

I second this(especially since my car seems unhappy with mp3 files)
