Default best way to backup hard drive?

I want to try out Windows 8 so I need to make a full image of the hard drive with windows 7 in its current state. Whats the best way to do that?

Acronis True Image, I just wanted to beat somebody else here to saying that.

What disk drives to you gave now? Now may be a good time to also just buy a new fast spinny disk (Western Digital Caviar Black are great) or a nice new SSD drive (Samsung 840 Pro are great) and use that for your tests.

Awesome thanks Darryl! I have an SSD right now for my OS and a WD Black for my audio. I also have a couple other misc drives for samples and backup. I really want to try W8 on my SSD and I dont think I should spend the money on another one for this right now.

Is there anything trusted to the freeware realm for this?

Not that I've used. I just stick with Acronis, but mostly I'm on Macs for audio or running Windows under VMware products nowadays so not out there trying out other imaging products.

Actually there is. Seagate used to offer a feature limited rebranded version of Acronis as Seagate Disk Wizard. You used to be able to download the .iso for free from their site and burn a bootable CD. Last I checked - which was a year or so ago the download was still there. As I recall you can only clone one drive to another but it worked with any brand drive.

Macrium Reflect is excellent freeware, I clone all my rigs with it and so far so good.

Look at Windows 7 Backup (in Control Panel).

I think it can make an image backup...

Just rockin'...what more is there?
