Default Pro Tools TDM 5 years from now?

The fact is, we keep getting better software tools and creative abilities every time we get a significant hardware advancement. And the advancements are coming faster.

The 16 core dual i7 MacPro, coming this year sometime, is an exciting development. In 5 years we probably won't even need hard drives anymore. Everything will be done instantaneously in RAM-type storage--no more read/write or bandwidth bottlenecks like we see now. There will be other bottlenecks, to be sure, but they'll be overcome eventually as well.

This begs the question: what will PT hardware look like in 5 years or less? At some point, won't the current DSP cards be a choke on the system? At what point do the HD Accel cards become the 2500 baud modem in a broadband world? At what point does PT's 32 bit architecture cease to be compatible with new operating systems? You have to figure that new OSs will eventually stop supporting 32bit apps sometime in the next 5 years.

PT TDM hardware/software hasn't changed much in the last 5+ years. I have to believe that's about to change in a huge way. And I don't just mean faster DSP chips.

Thoughts?
