Default overall slowness

Hello, I ran every possible Windows 7 DAW tweak before installing PT9. Now there is a very annoying lag between actaully clicking on the mouse, and the line showinging up on the mix window. This also happens when moving a region or anything else. Am I missing something here? It's actaully slower than PT8 on XP (same box, different drive)

I did this to finally access my 8GB and now it's actually slower

Interesting as my rig got much faster going from XP to Win7 64 bit. 2 things to check, if you have open end record allocation(in preferences), change it to 15 minutes(or more if the project requires it). The other is to check your RAM timings in BIOS. With my rig, the AUTO setting netted awful performance. Setting RAM timings manually made a huge improvement. If none of this helps, try posting a Sandra report as it might help you get better advice

Every mouse click has a lag before showing the cursor. How might one check RAM timing info, etc? Here's the report:

Just as long as you know that PT can't access more than 4GB, and 3 - 3.7GB on some systems.

Your RAM timings stand out. Each Module should be manually set to the same timing. You have different brands, which could be a problem; however, 5-5-5-15 seems to be a good base setting for DDR2-800.

Yeah you know about it it's been all over this forum for years - no 64bit Pro Tools...anyway.

Manually setting the RAM timings will be done in the BIOS of your system.

Youtube should be able to help you out with specifics. But is shouldn't be that hard. I have a ASUS board and it was pretty easy.

Like YYR123 said, it's done in the BIOS under Memory Settings. I don't use ASUS so yeah, maybe YouTube can help you out on how to get there. Or, try the manual.

It turns out I had the new install of PT9 on Windows 7 storing projects on the same drive...This was the problem, not the memory settings, which by the way have zero documentation in the manual. That's right, not a shred of info about the massive amount of settings in the BIOS. nothing ...at all, anywhere - youtube yeilded maybe 2 videos of people unboxing the motherboard

Getting to the memory settings shouldn't be too difficult. Just comb through the BIOS tabs to find the one displaying the memory options... Change from Auto to Manual, then set each module's CL, tRCD, tRD, and tRAS as follows:

CL 5
tRCD 5
tRD 5
tRAS 15

RAM timings is the culprit in many cases but, if all is now working well and stable then I wouldn't worry about it.
