Default ProTools 7,4,2 / NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Issues?

Hello
I just read this little info (see below) in the read me doc for ProTools LE 7.4.2 and I was wondering what kind of "known compatibility issues" are we talking about?

I'm just curious as I was stupid enough to get one of those Mac Pros with the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MBcard

Right now I'm running the following setup:
Mac Pro dual 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeo, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB, 10gb ram OSX 10.5.3
ProTools LE 7.4cs5, DV Toolkit2, McDSP Classic Pack, Speakerphone
Digi002R / RME Fireface800 (18 I/O)

Cheers / Mike

From the read me doc:
Compatibility Issues with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT & 7300 GT Cards (Item #103425)
There are known compatibility issues with NVIDIA display cards and Mac OS X 10.5.3. For this reason, Digidesign is only qualifying Macs with ATI display cards for ProTools 7.4.2.

I have a similar config as you except with the 3.0 processors. I am planning to upgrade to 10.5.3 and to Pro Tools 7.4.2 when I finish some video projects. This upgrade will be the first Pro Tools install on this Mac as I am in the process of switching from PC to Mac. I was unaware of this issue until I saw your post. I would like to hear if anyone is actually experiencing problems or if this is simply a "qualified" system issue. I have run an unqualified PC system for years with little or no problem. I needed the NVidia for my video work. I would be a little upset if it keeps Pro Tools from working.

I dont know if its related or not but I put 7.4.2 on and its laggy, both graphically and when you hit PLAY it takes a second to start etc. Didnt have this issue with 7.4.1rc5 on leopard!

And I too have a mac pro 2.8 8 core with 8800gt and 10gb ram, using an mbox (original one)

Hello
I might give it a try today and upgrade to 7.4.2 LE and see what's happen. I have some spare time and I also have a very stable mobile setup on a MBP 2.4GHz Intel Core Duo, 4GB ram 10.4.10 and ProTools LE 7.3.1cs6, DIGI002R

The strange thing in my opinion is that when I got my Mac Pro with the pre installed OSX 10.5.1 I installed PT LE 7.4 and I can't remember any "lost connection.." messages but after installing the latest cs update of PT LE 7.4 I get those lost connection messages more or less every 5-15 minutes.

I haven't done a 100% check according to the troubleshooting info but I will look into that in case this new 7.4.2 doesn't fix those issues.

cheers
/Mike

hi,

Talking about HD. But the latency existed in 7.4.1 also. And it's not 8800 relative but quicktime. In my experience, trashing presh, reconstruct database and playing with only 4 processors, did the job.
In the "read me" of 7.4.2, you can see that playing with the "sound system préference" put away that latency.

Just to let you know even if it's under a protools HD1 system, i installed mac os X.5.3, and protools 7.4.2 on a clone drive of my "february" macpro. I opened and played very successfully a few sessions with video, and they played great. No problem at all.

Hope it helps

The problem wtih the NVidia cards was (is?) due to a driver issue with those cards. Apple and NVidia are aware of the issue and it's supposedly fixed in 10.5.3 however, while we were unable to reproduce the problem with 10.5.3, we did not feel it got enough soak time to remove the item from the Read Me.

The problems would manifest as very slow to non-existent screen redraws and mouse tracking and general sluggishness.

Hello again
Thanx for all info. Today I finally made the installation of 7.4.2 and guess what!!! All my lost connection to the hardware issues are gone or at least didn't appear.

In fact I didn't find anything not working Thank god for that but on the other hand I only opened one 24 ch live rec session with lots of McDSP plugins, 2 x TL space and some SoundToys effects. Plus the AmpegSVX om the bass di.

Tomorrow I will open a post production session with a quicktime movie, Speakerphone and some other stuff...

Cheers / Mike

PS! Wish I could use mu 2 UADe cards but the workaround is just to much for me especially for the post stuff
