Default PT 6.1 Keeps Crashing my system...

Hi,

Well I finally built a computer after much debate. Not sure I made the right choice but anyhow. Running Win XP, Asus A7V600, XP2500 Mobile, 1G PC3200 ram, 2 120 MB WD drives, pretty much the system at the top of the forum. Did a clean install of PT 6.1. I've had it running a couple of times but 4 out of 5 times it crashes my system to the point of re-boot or I get the BSOD. I've set up my own log-in under XP just for Pro Tools. Disabled Norton. Running MBM in the tray and that's about all. I've also re-installed the program once already. Thoughts? Should I update to 6.1.1 or 6.4? Can it get any worse?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Download MemTest and run this for a few hours, should eliminate RAM as a culprit.

Thanks for the tip. Running it now. This problem is absolutely KILLING ME! I initially ran a successful Prime 95 test when I built the PC end of last week. I'm feeling like it's a driver issue. Sometimes PT starts and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it just plan locks up in the middle of a session.

I'll post back after a nights worth of the memtest.

Kurt

Well, it's not memory. I ran memtest for 12 hours with 0 errors. In the beginning the system seemed a little rocky and it was a new build so I was still sorting things out. I'm only running a mild overclock at 200/10 (2G). I'm definately feeling it's software related. It seems to be a driver issue or something. I purchased the 001 used but paid for PT 6.1 so maybe Digi will give me some support.

I'm still hoping someone on this board might have the answer.

Anybody?

Well, I just ran a 24 hour Prime 95 test with 0 errors. This system is stable.

I could try to run the system without the overclock if that worked I'd have a different problem since I designed the system to run at higher clock speeds. This is the same mobo/ram/hd config that is recommended in the top post.

Still stumped...

Just a follow-up. Ran the system at 1.2G and it still crashes.

Still stumped.

OK, when you say "crashes" what exactly happens?

Different things happen. Sometimes as soon as I click the Pro Tools icon my system crashes and reboots. Sometimes Pro Tools starts to load and then my system crashes and reboots. Sometimes I can run say the demo session for 7 or 8 minutes and my system just freezes and I have to reboot (no mouse response cant bring up the task list).

More info: I'm running the Asus A7V600 with an Athlon XP2500 mobile at 200/10 1.6V core. 2 sticks of crucial PC3200 (Asus approved). 2 WD 120MB Special Editions. Win XP Home with SP1 and Pro Tools on the Master and the other 120 MB drive used to store audio sessions (slave). 2 Lite On Optical Drives. Radeon dual head 9200 vid card and an Oxygen midi controller. I'm running the 001 in slot three with it's on IRQ. I've disabled Norton and everything else in my tray except MBM and the windows volume control. I've disabled networking, I've enabled DMA, disabled system standby and power management, disabled cleartype smoothing.

I've successfully run a 12 hour memtest and a 24 hour Prime95 Torture test to validate the system.
Still no go. I've also re-installed Pro Tools once (2 installs total). Am I missing something here? Obviously but what?

Apparently, there are issues with M-Audio gear as reflected in This Thread. Try removing and uninstalling the Oxygen, or possibly updating the drivers..

I'm using a different motherboard, but the only time I've ever had PT crash on me was once when I had a thermal problem, and a few times for a few poorly written wrapped VST plugs.

I don't think it's a thermal problem or your torture test should have triggered it (should is the key word) But still, how are your temperatures?

What other software/plugins do you have installed? Have you done a clean install of the OS?
