Default Playback volume much louder than recording volume

When punching in vocals, the part of the vocals playing during the lead up to the punch are extremely loud, then when I do the punch the vocal monitoring level drops down the the desired level. I can't figure it out???

How do I get the monitoring level to be the same as the recording level?

Please, any suggestions? My ears are ringing~~~

Do you have plugins on the track? Try disabling them until you finish all the recording. Double-check all your settings as I have never had this problem unless the gain got changed or a mic cable went bad. When overdubbing, I find that if I push the track fader(which does not affect recording level) to +6-9db, that usually makes the track(and my new recording) stick out enough to hear for the recording. Once I have finished tracking, the fader gets put back to -0.

I think you're right. I record my own demos and usually, I mix the music first w/ a comp on the master bus. Then I listen to that while writing lyrics and vocal melodies, and I start singing when I have something... The compressor on the master bus was the culprit.

Thanks for the reply!!!
