No, you all should upgrade now before the new so called HD cards come out and then upgrade again when the new card are out. But wait you might have to upgrade again when the new Pro Tools software changes to a 64 bit platform, along with upgrading all of your plugin as well. WOW! I wonder what the price would be to upgrade your waves plugins if you don’t have WUP..... How long will it be till all the TDM plugin will work in a 64 bit app world.

Damn, what to do.

I haven't made the jump to 8.1 because it seems Avid simply adds bugs instead of removing them with new updates now, that being said I was at a friends place who had 8.1/Heat and I got a chance to really mess with it. Sadly, after all the hype, I was really disappointed. I understand that the Crane Song gents developed it but I can't say sonically I feel that its nearly as flexible as the phoenix (as well as Massey Tape Head and digi Real Tape Suite). It's got two knobs which in my opinion sound only good fixed in one configuration and it clouded up all of our test mixes rather than giving it some "heat". So, while I'm not going to say its useless(likely many of you may find uses for it) I'd say that definitely don't shoot yourself for staying in 8.0.4 and not buying HEAT

what woul be the diference of running your audio through a ssl ( no eq added, assuming everything sounds the way you like it) and a summing amp

Again, not trying to be a hard ass, but this point is a little confusing to me

Thanks
They are vert different, because there are many amp modules or circuits in the console that the sound will pass through even you don't use any EQ on it, but in a summing amp, amp cirdults are much less than a console, that's what the difference come from.

I would think it was a compromise. If you have the choice, you can always voluntarily choose to have the same color on everything. But lacking the choice...
Yes I agree with this.
