the latest PTLE that will work with the 001 is 6.4.
check in the besk desktops thread that is stickied at the top for more computer info. also check the recommended systems info on the digidesign website.

I posted in that forum too, but not sure it'll get a response. There are SO many posts in that thread, and I am a novice at building computers. I just found this good deal so I was hoping someone would let me know if it would work. On the DigiDesign site it says, for 6.4xp:
"AMD Athlon XP - Processors of all speeds supported" - so I assume this is safe. But I have no idea how good it is. Can anyone confirm that the set below is compatible and if it's worth it? I found it for cheap and want to build a PC system around it. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

# AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Venice 2.2GHz Socket 939 Processor
# Foxconn 761GXK8MB-RS Socket 939 SiS 761 GX Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
# FreeTech PX6200TD-128M GeForce 6200 128MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card

Asch- I am currently upgrading my system for an 001 with PT6.4. I will not go to an 002 because, in my opinion, they aren't worth it. MY 001 has never let me down and I have a kick butt setup for PT6.4.

Your setup looks good so far, but I have never used that motherboard you mentioned. I'm waiting on the ASUS A8V-SE motherboard to come in at newegg.com. This board can be used with an AMD single core, or dual core cpu. If you get the dual core cpu, you have to disable one because PT6.4 doesn't support dual core. I still might get the fasted single core cpu like the one you mentioned. An AMD 64 with the ASUS board and a gig of ram. I will keep you posted on what happens. I know that "best desktops" thread is impossible to read through.

You are on the right track though. I suggest you look into the motherboard you mentioned and make sure it is solid with PT6.4. and your 001. YOu can't go wrong with the ASUS board though. Some of them are just hard to find now with the techology push in the computer world. Things are practically obsolete after they are sold from the shelves. haha. Good luck and keep checking back on the DUC.

thanks for the reply! The question is, how can I tell if it will work? The DD site says all AMD will work, so is it safe to assume that this chip and some hot ram will work out perfectly?

For the AMD sets, what's the slowest you'd go on them? AMD 64 3000+ or is it safe to go below 3000?

i am not sure if that board will work because it is SIS chipset. you should just get the a8v mentioned earlier and save yourself a lot of hassle. not every amd board will work.

as far as processor you might as well get the fastest you can afford, i guess it really depends on how much you want to do with PTLE.

ah, SIS, I forgot. But it looks like AMD w/o SIS is compatible, yes? If so, it allows me many options to shop for best deals. Right now, I have a MAC that chokes when using 5 plug ins - I figured a new PC with lots of RAM will be better. I would like the ASUS, but not sure I can afford it while building the machine. Seems the pentiums have a lots of specifics on what chipset you can use, but AMD 64 is pretty wide open, as long as it's not SIS. Is that correct?

Thanks again.

amd boards with via chipsets are usually good. if you are going to purchase a board, try to search in the archive to see if anyone has had success. id strongly recommend that you get the a8v, its proven to work and digi approved. it could really save you a lot of problems. maybe even if you have to buy a bit less ram to get this board, its easy to get ram later.

okay, thanks - this does help and I appreciate it.
Re: video card - is it fully necessary to have a seperate video card, or does it just make everything run better since you wouldn't be pulling power from MOBO itself?

i have been using mine with a radeon 9200 agp card. you can get these now for like $20-30 and it will be all that you need. anything is better than the onboard because it shares your ram and it can sometimes cause conflicts with PT.
