A dual G5 should work fine for what you propose (just stay away from the water cooled ones). Plenty of threads about what you can expect. Search G5 PT8.... for instance.....

I am considering an OSX86 box . I'll list detailed specs once we've tested one working with PCI-x HD core and HD process. Its cheaper than upgrading to HD Accel PCI-e and a new intel Mac.

Hey there well, after many many years of using vanilla systems and handing over the appropriate parties my hard earned cash, I have finally decided to take the "other" road and build my own!

The straw that broke the Camel's back? Well, I have an Protools 8 HD 4 Rig running on my Dual 1.6 G4, and I finally want to upgrade so I can get some RTAS happening. The vanilla route = PCI to PCIe update for the cards, loose one card + system cost. It will end up costing around 10K to upgrade a system that I've already invested $25K in. The other slightly less vanilla option is to Buy a Magma P6ER4 expansion chassis (Which digi just announced it's terminating support for) 2.1K + System for a total cost of 4.5K.

If I build the Chassis myself I can get it done for 1.6K + 2.4K for the system = 4K.

It seems that Digi and Apple are forcing me to follow the yellow brick road, or not, depending on your point of view. Either way, something which should be straight forward and easy......rewarding people who have invested heavily in your product....is not so easy.

So, I'm going to build the computer myself and save whole bunch of money.....Wish I could do the same for my Control 24, which after 5 power supply replacements, just fried my Tannoy Elipse 8's by putting out a continuos 100 hertz square wave at 120 db. I was pretty upset when I arrived at my studio the next morning! (sadly my assistant forgot to turn off the monitors over night).

Any info on good Motherboard, and graphics cards to base this on? I pretty much figure if I get these two right, the rest will be a little more malleable, as far as leopard is concerned.

I need something with at least 4 64 bit PCI slots for HD.

When did Digi drop the Magma chassis. Their statement only mentioned the Digi branded one, which is not the same thing.

Unless I am wrong. If they specifically mention the Magma, that is another story.

Just an FYI for some people that may be interested...

I recently built a Hackintosh for an arranger friend that wanted to upgrade his Logic rig from a G5 quad.
Once I built it and set the software up, I decided to stick a core card and accel card in there (HD2) and installed PT and briefly tested it (I'd actually chosen a recommended motherboard from the DUC windows forum just because I wanted to try PT out).

Worked fine in Leopard, though I didn't push it by going gung-ho with track count and plugins.
He now has a very stable, powerful Logic rig for under 1.5k that can always be upgraded whenever he wants a new CPU in there.
All hail Hackintoshes!

I think what has actually happened is that Digi no longer distribute the Magma. AFAIK it is still supported.

I nearly went down the Hackintosh route before buying my (NOS) G5 quad.

I came to the conclusion that I may as well a) Run a PC with Windows or b) Bite the bullet and buy a mac.

At the end of the day I wanted a system which I could rely on and not have that niggle and the back of my mind that it might fall over, or that installing a simple update might break my system.

See if you have a supported system, and encounter a bug which loads of people also encounter, Digi are going to fix it pretty sharpish (assuming it's serious). If you have an unsupported system, and are the only person to encounter the bug - I can't see them trying to fix it very quickly... If at all.
