With mic'ed sources, using excellent mics and preamps 96K is sublime.

I agree with Mike. It all depends on the source and great pre's will make any sample rate sound good. If you are using loops from an audio CD then whats the point of going beyond 44.1k. If you are using vocals and various mic'ed sources then why not go to 96k. BTW this debate has been around since the begining of the user conference...I had a different user name back then. I have heard 16bit 44.1k recordings that sound warmer and cleaner then the 24bit 48k or otherwise...like Trevor Horns recordings from way back in the day. Remember we gotta dither that crap down to 16bit 44.1 again anyways so in most cases it does'nt make a huge difference especially if you are using crusty samples from an sp12 drum machine!!!...commodore 64 anyone? Geez, I'm really showing my age there...But if all of the source is mic'ed live with the good pre's then you will hear some differences in the upper harmonic register...Do you have the puppy dog ears?...cause most of the listening audience does'nt. It's all going to end up as an MP3 (or AC3) and sound like crap anyways so forget bout it.
Let the debate continue,
