Default Pro Tools AAF Export Problem (please, urgent!) :(

Hi there,

I'm new to the forum (although I read it relentlessly for fixes so thank you all) but I'm stumped with this current problem.

I received a 4.3GB embedded AAF from an editor through media composer and was able to import it and work on it in pro tools without any problem.

Now I have to export it as an AAF and send it back, now this is where I am having issues.

My exported AAF file is only ever getting to 2GB in size and if I try and reopen it in pro tools, I get an error message saying 'file is not a pro tools session or OMFI file'.

I know from media composer's end there is an option to create an AAF bigger than 2GB, but I can't find it on the pro tools end! Also, the work I have added to the project is on seperate tracks, if I export them seperate to the original tracks, I don't have an issue. It is only when I include the original tracks that came with the AAF that it doesn't work (and caps out at 2GB). I need to be able to export them all together as I have replaced sounds and muted clips in the original tracks to show what has been changed.

Please help!!

Did you tried to, export selected tracks as AAF? This way you can split your session in multiple parts under 2GB limit.

That does indeed solve the size problem, but now I'm discovering that the AAF file does not retain clip gain/automation or muted clip data... Nightmare

This is a known limitation of going from Pro Tools to Media Composer via AAF. It is related to Pro Tools having sample accurate automation and Media Composer having frame accurate automation.

Avid is well aware that they need to have sample accurate audio editing and audio automation (MC users call it keyframes) for these types of workflows. I have no idea when this will become a feature of Media Composer.

Isn't it about time Avid and Protools integrated their platforms fully? You should be able to take a Media Composer project and open it directly in Protools - or at least the audio tracks, as long as you have access to the media. Then, you should be able to send it back to the picture editor for recuts WITHOUT LOSING ANY OF THE WORK YOU HAVE DONE. The picture editor may not have all your plugins, but it doesn't matter. The data goes across, and comes back with his recuts.

Surely it should be possible to have just one type of project for both systems, but with a different user interface depending on whether you are doing pictures or sound.

Why is this not already a thing? Am I being unrealistic?

It's bad when you use their "integrated" Interplay workflow and that doesn't work properly. It usually does but there are a lot of places that need improvement. And the whole process is unnecessarily convoluted.

While I find Audition to be a generally useless program, it is nice that you can open a Premiere project and go.

The present system is hardly "integrated" at all. You have to use EDLs or manual conform to make changes. Incredibly primitive. I guess I'm talking about a seamless integration where a Protools session and an Avid project are exactly the same thing, but have different working windows depending on what you are doing.

Well, Media Composer and ProTools paradigms are so different, it will take time to make this.
But Avid is surely doing it. Same session format, juste different apps.
