Default Re: GTX 680 or HD7950 vid card and HDX-3 - how do i do power for the cards?

So my conclusions on this topic...

First

There is no possibility to power the HDX Card with the mac cable on a mac pro with a gcard, which uses both power connectors.
For this you would need a splitter cable : 6 pin mini pcie (Macpro) to one
6 pin mini pcie (HDX Card) and one normal 6 pin pcie (Graphiccard)
Such a cable doesn´t exist...

Fidelis, it would be nice, if you could explain, how you power your card with a normal splitter cable... The mac cable has only the propritary mac pro mini 6 pin connector.

Second

The posted Sata to Molex Adapter cables don´t work with the Mac Pro, cause they don´t fit. The Mac Pro uses a combined sata connector (data and power). So the 15 pin adapter cables cannot be plugged in to the 22 pin combo connector.

In the Avid HDX User Guide you find 2 power cables... MP Mini 6 Pin to avid connector and Molex to avid...

In a article at protools expert, someone tried to use the hdx Card with the new sonnet eGFX tb3 enclosure, but had no luck with it, cause the eGFX uses a normal 6 pin connector...

Here is the link

http://www.pro-tools-expert.com/home...erbolt-chassis

Maybe Sonnet brings an adapter cable from normal 6 pin to HDX connector...

I hope so... cause for now. The only way to use a hdx card is to downgrade your videocard to one, which uses only one power connector...

On the other side, i read, that the new cards come with 3 cables...
One with normal 6 pin to hdx...

Is this true or not... I hope somebody, who purchased a card in this and the last year can comfirm that...

Or is someone from Avid here, who can say, what cables come with the hdx card or how to handle this situation....

Pls help

thanks

Hello. That tech is on point. The GTX 680 and ATI 7950 will both utilize two AUX power ports.

You don't really have to run a wire from the optical area to the PCIe slot area. Instead you can use the SATA connection from the Drive Bay 3 or 4. You can get a SATA to 6-pin adapter.

To the GPU, I would connect one 6-pin from the logic board and one 6-pin fro the SATA adapter.
To the HDX, I would connect the 6-pin straight from the logic board. The HDX is worth more money, so it's better to be safe with that.

For example:
https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Sata15...dp/B01EUSZ0BQ/

The other route will be to connect an external power supply, which can sometimes be complicated with wiring.

Default GTX 680 or HD7950 vid card and HDX-3 - how do i do power for the cards?

Hi all,

Sorry for the delay. too much work here.

All started when I saw this article on Pro Tools expert: http://www.pro-tools-expert.com/home...-in-my-mac-pro

From there I've contacted the guys from "Create Pro" and they sent me that exactly splitter cable you see on the article. Guess what? Didn't work! Although the mac pro end of it was right, the other end of the splitter didn't fit the AVID HDX cable (but fitted the video card). So my tech used the second HDX cable provided with my system (the one for PC), and used it to adapt to the one supplied by Create Pro. And it worked!!! So its not easy, but its possible.

I do think that you can find the right splitter on eBay...

As I said before I personally recommend using the splitter cable to power both the HDX & GPU, then the second Mac Pro port for the GPU. That's the way I'm using it.

Oh, and my video card is GTX 970.

Hope that helps!

Cheers.

Ps. All that is working on an upgraded Mac Pro 4.1 (now 5.1). From 8 core 2.26 to a 12 core 3.33.

Thank you Fidelis

So you use a special handmade Splitter cable and not a normal one....

Are you using the one Mac power connector to 2 6 pin Connectors (Both in your GCard)
solution with your Amd HD7950 ? You know, that amd says this card needs 200 Watt...

For me, I will go the Sata route, as i saw, that its not that hard, to break the one plastic clip...

To all Users...

Again, i read, that Avid put a full size PCIe 6 Pin to HDX 4 Pin into the hdx new cards...
Is this true... Thats important, cause then i can use the card with a normal splitter cable or in my PC, which has no molex connectors, only 6 Pin PCIe...

after trying all the video cards from the thread title and went for this one which only require one connection to the PS
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8192 MB .
With this one I have a boot screen with my 4k monitor connected HDMI.

The GTX1080 needs 184watts of power. But each power socket of the max pro should give you a max of 75watts. So be careful with your choices. You can damage your Mac.

And I just edited my post correcting the model I use GTX970

Yes, I am using the splitter cable (both ends) to power my HD7950 graphics card, as the ends of the splitter cable do not fit the HDX card. I realize this could require more power than the port can provide, but have not had any issues so far. I only use this machine for ProTools, so there is not a lot of drain on the graphics card. In fact, the only reason I upgraded it was so that I could run a 4K monitor, as the factory card did not support 4K resolution. AMD will always list the max power the card will need under full load, which is wise for the manufacturer to do. In my setup, however, I do not see it ever being pushed that hard. If I ever sell this computer, the HDX card will come out and I return it to having two separate power cables for the graphics card as intended before selling it.

I ve read from some sources the AMD HD 7950 needs 140 Watt, when idle...
So if you don´t use your card for 3d or video editing, you are safe with
the Splitter Dual power from one powersource...

The Problem is, if you are using the Card (even in Protools HD for picture rendering)
over the power Limit, the ports can´t deliver, you can definitly brick your Macpro...
I ve read, that one of the MP Connectors can go up to 110 Watt for a long time, but it will die, cause of the high watts...

The lines from the PSU are going through the Logic Board, MB...and if more power is needed... this lines overheat and melt and destroy the motherboard... There are Stories out there, so be careful...
