Default -002R Mic Pre\'s and Good Guitar Tone?

I've been hearing a lot of people say you can't get a realy good guitar tone using the mic pre's on the -002R. I'm talking mainly a good, full, overdriven electric guitar tone. Also acoustic.

Can anyone here dispute this claim?

I have had a few issues getting a great tone but can suggest trying a tube pre and a few variaties of mics till you find what you are looking for. I have also recorded stereo guitar tracks from a LINE 6 combo going out of the stereo XLRs into the standard mic pres on the DIGI 002 R
it worked out pretty good on a fairly overdriven sound if that is what you are looking for. If you want to hear a sample check out the following link. All the guitars were recorded directly from the LINE 6 NOT miked! But I have done both with good results.

hope this helps!

It largely depends on the mike, the amp, the guitar, and the player. The 002 pre itself, while not the best, will give a pretty true representation of what's being recorded.
If it's a piece of crap guitar, an offbrand mike, a 200.00 amp, and some hack with a Boss overdrive, it's got no prayer of sounding good.
Then again, if it's a nice strat, a 57, a Carr amp, and a decent player, there will be no way for it to sound bad.

I sometimes record acoustic guitars through the 002 pres with a pair of AKG 451s.
Sounds awfully good to me, and to the clients.

If you're talking about plugging a guitar directly into an 002 pre and getting a good sound...oh forget it, no one would actually think that was a good idea, so I won't comment further.

BS, whoever told you that is either a gear snob or doesnt know what they are doing, its become fashionable to bag the 002 pres. they certainly arent the best pres around but they are very usable.

for a good guitar sound you need, in this order
1 a great player
2 a great sound coming from the amp. if it sounds like cr@p out of the amp you cant do a lot to make it better. you may need to adjust the amp your self, dont leave it all to the guitarist.
3 a decent mic. just stick an SM57 or a beta57 in front of a great player with a great sound and press record.
once you get that then think about a better pre if you have the cash.

the main thing for acoustic after the player and the guitar its self is mic positioning. you can get a good recording through a fairly cheep mic into almost any pre if it sounds good to begin with and you position your mics well.

dont over compress guitars they should be dynamic

as EJ said you will not get a good sound from the 'instrument input' on the 002. it is not a proper DI

just my $0.02 anyway
