Default 2018.1 transfered to new owner, can't renew yearly support

I recently sold and transferred ownership of my Pro Tools 2018.1, 12, 11, 10 to a new owner. The transfer was done through Avid with a support ticket. The yearly update/renewal package expired in March and I did not renew it.

The new owner claims he can't buy or activate the yearly update package. He want's the latest 2018.7.

Is there a reason he can't activate it? Or is he doing something wrong? I understood that as long a a version was current, it could be renewed.

Thanks for any help.

He needs to buy the “reinstatement” package. You/he only had until April to buy an “upgrade/renewal” since you let it expire. Reinstatements can be bought from any Avid dealer.

Even though it is the current version? 2018?

Yes. The version (your full version number) that your plan expires on is where you stay if you don't renew within 1 month of expiration. After 1 month you need a reinstatement for (much) more money.

The name of Pro Tools (like "2018") just tells you when it was released now. There has been no real "version" since Pro Tools 11.

Thanks for the input. Please don't take offense to this, but the pricing structure that avid has renders a license without a current update plan in place, almost worthless.

New Pro-Tools = $599

Cost of reinstatement = $299

$200 difference, plus it costs $40 to transfer it to a new user.

Net value = $160 for a current license.

Just the time involved to do a transfer and sell it, eat up the rest.

I guess I didn't really own anything...

Oh well. Lessons learned. Thanks for your help.

New - Reinstatement = $300, but yes... a Perpetual License with a current Upgrade Plan would obviously be more valuable.
