Default Playback speed-Buffer size issue

Hi, I΄m using Pro Tools 10 with a Presonus Audiobox 44VSL.

I΄m working in a session with 256 buffer size, when I try to change the buffer size to a lower one (32, 64 or 128) the playback speed also gets lower, it is the same effect as using a time stretch. The lower the buffer, the lower the playback speed.

I need to lower the buffer to reduce latency when I record but I cannot.
It is strange that this doesn΄t happen when the buffer is increased.

Any can help?!!!

I'll admit this is the first I've heard of this happening.

If this can help, here you have an example of what happens.

First you hear a 256 buffer render, then a 64 one.

Hey,

If you go to your playback engine and switch to the built in output and switch buffers does it do the same thing?

You mean the onboard audio card? No, it doesn΄t, but I hear constant clicks and pops.

Do you thing this can be a problem with the interface drivers?

What's your system/harddrives? Speed of harddrives? How do you record to the drive!? Internal or external? What speed of the external drive and or the internal drive? OS? Computer specs etc etc

Pleae use this and it says "read before posting"

That was the exact purpose of that test... so you know it has to do with your interface... the pops and clicks on your computers sound card could be other issues like the internal sound card not being able to use low latency monitoring, or it is being used by another application (like your system sounds in Windows, I assume your on Windows, or are you on MAC?) etc...

I would definitely look for a driver update and contact Presonus about the issue your having since you now know the slower playback and buffer size switching is only on the presonus unit.

Wouldnt hurt to do as stated above and make sure you have A. 2 hard drives, one for your OS and Pro Tools and one that actually has the sessions and audio files, so it is not trying to read/write all the data from/to one disk. and B. Make sure the hard drives meet the minimum requirements which can be found on Avids Website by clicking one of the links at the top of this page.

First off 4GB is a bit low. Should be a minimum of 8GB for PT but 4GB might work for this pupose right now.
Secondly you NEED a minimum of 2 harddrives. Also both drives NEED to be a minimum of 7200rpm.

This is REALLY important.

One for OS and PT and one external drive to record to and in this case hold the samples aswell to start with. Preferablly a FW or internal but NOT usb2. The drive you have now is only gonna screw your setup whatever drivers and whatnot you re-install. It is only 5400 rpm and totally useless in this scenario. Other members have had great success with WD Caviar BLACK. Definately NO "Blue or Green" drives. They are Crapware and should never have been produced in the first place ...
You can use other brands or even better option SSD's like Samsung Pro 840 for OS drive and a WD Caviar Black for recording or both SSD's if you have the money. Whatever you get make sure they meet the proper recomendations from Avid and this forum or this is never gonna work as advertized. Promise

Best
Chris
