Pcie is still limited by the speed of the protocol that is "feeding" into it. So while the bandwidth is there, it is a matter of what can take advantage of it. Audio alone is not going to do it. Audio would not ever need even 5Gb/ps in the most extreme cases. Video of course is different, as are our displays. This is the problem with Thunderbolt and daisy chaining. Drive write speeds for example can be cut 3/4 just by being at the end of a Thunderbolt daisy chain.

The controller size needed for Ethernet of any sort will always be a hindrance for it, especially when multiples are needed, which is why it has been pretty well eliminated on newer laptops. Chances are, it will stay a specialty product. USB 3.1 would be the cheapest all around option that would solve most peoples needs and has the same max speed as Ethernet(10Gbps) . As far as what I know, optical is only used in AVB to overcome the distance limitation of 100 meters of standard network cabling. .

These are Mac specific, But until things like this could be resolved by Windows, they would not release a universal Windows driver, which is why it took a bit longer to adopt TB on PC. Though it may have been noticed that TB3 was adopted by PC before Apple.

Interesting, never once experienced or heard anywhere about these issues actually causing harm. Certainly never came up here on the DUC.

Regardless, it's good that MS finally got around to it as it creates a uniformity that helps out developers for sure, which should mean better products for us all.

Most of all security exploits and security fixes are done to fix holes that are found by penetration testers and security firms, not because they have been "used" (fortunately). Microsoft being in the dominating factor in the server and data center market, obviously want to minimize such glaring holes in hardware security before it gives full support.

The example I heard was that somebody could plug in a drive that could compromise an entire network of computers below OS level.

That and Apple are horribly slow implementing new hardware.

I honestly think they R&D a product and then don't touch it for about 3 years and maybe after that only superficially

I mean look at the 2012 Mac Pro, it's not much different than the 2009/2010.

And more currently the 2013 nMP.....it's still the same hardware from 2013 (4 years)

Later versions of Thunderstrike could attack via webrowser or email as example and attack devices down the TB chain. That was the biggest risk as the other exploits needed access to the computer. outside of the NSA, were only known to be used in lab testing.

Funny, but had a talk recently with a few (15) suppliers I know in the states and canada.. and the sales of the digigrid never took off. So why would Avid go into a platform that doesn't sale?

I think DiGiGrid is a bit ahead of its time and too "pro" to expect massive hobbyist sales but the concept of getting rid of conventional wiring is sound. The broadcasters I've talked to can't wait for AVB products.

I think that's the way audio gear is evolving...
