Question: Regarding PT9 RAM usage on Win7 x64
I'm just trying to clear this up - I have here a nice shiny quad core i7 930 PC with 6gb of RAM running Win7 x64. I've been looking everywhere, and I can't find a straight answer to how this operating software allocates it's memory, so maybe someone could clear this question up;
Win7x64 can use more RAM, I get that, but when using 32 bit applications within the 64bit OS, do all the 32bit apps have access to 4gb max ram combined, or is this on a per-app basis? Eg: Win7 takes 1gb, Pro tools+plugins can take up to 4Gb, leaving 1Gb that can still be accessed by other 32 bit programs. Or is it that all 32bit apps have to share the same physical 4gb or RAM and only 64bit apps/the OS can access the other 2gb? Obviously if every app can access the maximum RAM each, 6gb of ram is a fairly decent investment as I still get a gig or so more in PT alone plus some nice headroom for multitasking (or possibly rewire if it runs in a seperate process) over a 32bit system. If it's not then, well that's a bit gash and I'll still be wishing for a 64bit native version.. |
