Just kidding... use Autotune or Melodyne maxed out!

And edit the hell out the vocal...

Maybe a vocoder?

Daft Punk has a large collection of vintage gear. I guess the vocal sound on "Harder.." is a sampled 70's vox box. See here: http://www.totonetwork.com/node/15794111
In any case the sound is very similar to the one used by Dr. Dre on "California Love" http://videokeman.com/2pac_tupac_sha...-tupac-shakur/

Word is that it is a talkbox modulating a synth, and there is a subculture about which synth to use etc. It evidnetly is a skill and not just "put a plug on it" evidently. It takes some experience as to where to place the tube and how to move the mouth to get optimum results.

It will be interesting to see what the talkbox plugin announced for PT8 will do. What will be the modulating signal? Did they model the properties of the amplified plastic tube a real talk box uses? And differing models of performers mouths (Let's use the Peter Frampton model because the Joe Walsh is too gritty?). Or will they supply a tube with it you use?

If they really successfully modeled how a real talk box works this alone could be worth the price of admission to PT 8 (some of the other features that many rave about might mean nothing to others- like the pitch feature to someone who has melodyne might not justify the hassle of dealing with Leopard when you have NI Vi's for example).

I doubt PT8 comes with a tube. It would be very nice if it's possible to insert it on a track/aux and use the mic as "the tube" and play the notes with the guitar or with some of the sounds from the VI plugins in PT8 to get talking guitars and synths effects. Like the Roger Troutman or Peter Frampton effect.

But I'm guessing this wount be possible.

The plastic tube reference was a bit facetious. But the idea of modeling the resonances of different mouths that will go to the microphone and being able to apply those like a microphone modeler to modulate a source like a synth or guitar seems feasible if someone wants to put enough work into.

Probably initially they would be only very approximate and only usable in some instances, but eventually Waves would license Peter Framptons mouth and introduce the PF TALKBOX plugin.

Maybe if there is enough interest (read profit potential)-
This sound has been being used a lot in the last few years and not immediately accesible to most people because of the learning required to get optimum results from a talkbox.

Ha! I can see the relief on those hard up dental practices who can finally scrape the alginate off those porn stars organs and cavities they've been modeling, and start pouring it over rock stars oral cavities (and Hammond organs I suppose) .

You could get a "talkbox" of sorts with the old Emu samplers over 14 years ago by running a vocal through the vocal formant filter and assigning the cavity size (if I remember correctly) to the mod wheel on your controller.

You then just played the virtual mouth with the mod wheel. So it shouldn't be too hard to achieve nowadays, remember Delay Lama? :

Cheers!

It’s clearly a vocoder (not “vocorder”) and clearly not a talkbox.

In this particular case, the carrier signal is that of a polyphonic synth (played with a keyboard or MIDIed) as becomes evident towards the end of the song, where the lead vocal part transitions from its simple and rigid form to the more expressive form, replete with all sorts of classic bluesy keyboard licks. In a few spots, the carrier exhibits obvious LFO modulation and two-note intervals pop in, here and there.

What makes this lead vocal so interesting is the choice of modulator (the source of the vocal articulation), which isn’t immediately obvious, unless you do this kind of thing on a regular basis. It’s a computer speech synthesizer. After recording the speech synth “reading” the text (lyrics), some extensive work went into conforming the vocal part to fit the track rhythmically.

IHTH.
