There is one other thing you may not have thought of...
When you are done using Pro Tools on one computer, you can move any licenses on your iLok to your iLok account by "deactivating" the license(s).

That stores the licenses in your iLok account.

When you want to use any of the licenses on your iLok account that are not installed on a physical iLok, you can login to your account using the iLok License Manager from any location, and transfer the licenses to any iLok registered to your account and plugged into whatever computer you are using.

You would have to remember (each time) to move the license from your iLok to your account when you are finished using it, but this would give you option of having 2 iLoks in 2 different physical locations and use your license from whichever location you are at without actually being at your studio.

Also, if you do get in the habit of moving a license you are not currently using from your iLok to your iLok account, you don't have to worry as much about losing the iLok. If you did lose it, you could get a new iLok and move the stored licenses to that.

This becomes more complex if you are dealing with a whole bunch of licenses, but it would be one way to go.

I'm using a UA apollo for interface. There's an ease of use/ergonomics to running PT10 on both studio and mobile computers; I can open the same sessions and let them live on an external drive. I know there are workarounds, it's just a drag to have to utilize a workaround. It just doesn't make sense to me that I'd need to buy another instance of a program to run on another computer, frankly.

You don't NEED to buy another instance of PT to run on another computer - you just have to move your iLok. That's the beauty of iLok - you can put PT on as many computers as you want but can only use one at a time. Cuts down on piracy of PT. Moving the iLok is NOT a workaround - it's the usual way of working.

Yup. That is how it is supposed to work. if you "must" have another ilok with authorizations on it for the notebook while on the road while your primary authorized ilok is in the studio, then you'll need to purchase another license. I know is not what you want to hear but it is the way it works.

I like that Eventide is granting 2 licenses with their Native releases.

Avid Everywhere may allow check out style of on line assets.

Me too. That is the greatest thing ever happened to iLok users!

That is great for Eventide owners…but how does that help the OP with his Protools license? I get it, that if Avid did the same as Eventide and gives two licenses or Protools per purchase, he would be a happy camper. However we all know that's not going to happen. So the solution is once again, to take your ilok with you.
