Default surround panner joystick

more and more we're getting gigs that involve surround mixing - and i'm growing tired of having to drag the little panning dot on the screen in order to write automation. does anyone have any experience with midi panning controllers like JLCooper Electronics surround panner option etc? we don't have a ton of money...so i might just have to live with what we have, but i feel like the midi controller would make the job so much more efficient.

thoughts?

thanks in advance,
paul

I'm using that same JL Cooper midi joystick panner with a 2x2 midisport. WORKS FANTASTIC. I know Digi is coming out with/or already has a Midi panner based on the exact design on the Cooper model. Is that one out yet? Last time I saw it was at NAB a year ago. So, hopefully it's available.

HI Eric,
What version of PT are you running? I thought digi dropped the non digi panners when they came out with their own.
Best,
Brandon

I'm running 7.4cs5, OS X.4.9 on a G5 2.7 DP.

The "surround panner" profile in the SETUP>PERIPHERALS>MIDI CONTROLLERS menu works most swimmingly with the older JL Coopers.

I have a command 8 and would like to upgrade to a pro control. Can I use the digi or JL Cooper panner with a Pro Control?
Best,
Brandon

It should work fine since the Pro Control runs off the ethernet port and the joystick will be running off a separate midi/usb port.

I have a question while we're on this topic. Can you map a MIDI CC message stream to control parameters of PT such as L/R and F/R panning?
I ask this because I'm planning (soon) to start running a PT rig along with Nuendo that I use now. In Nuendo, I can map MIDI messages to any parameter of the mixer/plugins, which allows me to use a Wacom tablet as a surround panner.
