I have a 4050 and it works well on my baritone voice. It has a brightness that keeps me from getting too mudy. However, I'm about the only one I use it on vocally. In fact, I would most likely sell it if it didn't fit that role so well.
I find the 103 to be a better all round vocal mic.
As you all know, this is a very subjective issue.

Thanks for the input, so to speak, on the 4050.. Lots of well stocked mic closets have 'em I've noticed...

Ty Ford could've gotten a couple free mics judging from his interesting NTK/Neumann TLM103, U87i and U87ai comparison in his article:

Nice crowd. BTW, does anyone know which AT Howard Stern's using?

He used to use a Neumann... looked like a TLM193.
Conan has a 4050 on his desk.
Rosie had (has) a gold one.
Carson used a 414.
Letterman has a beautiful old RCA.
Don't ever see Jay...

Ladies And Gentlemen

These are the Neumann Websites
http://www.neumann.com/welcome.php http://www.neumannusa.com/welcome.php

Yes "noi-mun" sounds strangs to us Americans
but, Their mics are fantastic if one has the money. I bought a TLM103 I looked at the other things Guitar center had and chose the
Neumann for its crisp response and clarity.
I listned to the Blue and the Neumann through the Avalon and i was impressed enough to buy the Neumann of course i want the Avalon sp 737 but its almost 2 grand. but its awesome.
Anyway I think the tlm 103 is on sale at Guitar center this month if not call my friend Art in Virginia Beach Guitar Center for a good price on the neuman at.

Carson never used a condensor. He used a 77DX and later a Shure ribbon (Model 300).

Leno now has a new Shure condensor on his desk but it is not used. Lavs are used on all guests. The old Carson show used a boom operator with a shotgun for the guests.

Sadly, all the desk mics are props. Lavs are easier to use since the A1 doesn't have to worry about placement or the talent getting off mic.

Stern used a U87 but the TV producers wanted a smaller mic on camera so they went with a 103. I think the last time I looked, they were using the Neumann handheld (105) for the guests.

Bravo network showed a concert with Tony Bennent and he used the 105. Sounded great.

WOW I've gotta get a bigger screen than this 5" one here- That's a TLM103? I thought fer sure it was an AT!!! They probably have an SM58 hidden under his shirt that's the live one!
Yeah- the ambiance is just too close for a mic to sound that tight from 2 feet away on those TV shows. Wouldn't be surprised if there were some Sennheiser 516's just out of frame actually doing the work...
The stern guests are now on RE20's

You know what really cracks me up is the fact that everyone now writes "Noyman" NOT Neumann...funny! I think we may have officially changed the spelling!

Want to hear a real story ?
A big studio went bankrupt some years ago in Belgium. The curator (the guy in charge of selling the studio's assets in order to recover some money) had an open day so people could visit and check out the equipment, and make offers. This guy I know visited the place, and the curator said "Seen anything interesting ?
- Nah, everything is too expensive for me. How much do you want for that little suitcase with these old rotten microphones ?
- I've no idea what it's worth, said the curator. How much would you give ?
- Mmmh, I don't know, the suitcase itself is in pretty bad shape... I'd say 150 bucks.
- How about 200 ? said the cunning curator.
- 200 ? mmm. Lemme think it over. Deal !

And so he paid 200 bucks cash and walked away with a suitcase full of vintage Noy-man mics, amongst others... and I swear it is not me !
Are you jealous yet ?

Ah well, I'll make do with my Rodes, Staggs and Sennheisers...

Cheers,
