Default Maxim-inconsistent behavior?

If I set the ceiling to, say, -1 db, I can pull the threshold down all the way without punching through the -1 db limit. OTOH I can push up a fader on a track that is input to the limiter and break through the -1 db limit easily. Seems like an inconsistency to me. Am I missing something obvious?

Hi,

The track that has maxim on, is this set to -0dbfs and not a bit over!!

With the ceiling at -1dbfs and the gain structure right you should not be able to go above -1

Likely cause is your master or mix bus fader is set above 0
Or something in your mixer like a reverb return is not routed through the limiter and is routed direct to the output and therefore not being limited

The master fader is set to 0 db but since inserts on the master fader are post-fader it shouldn't make any difference.

Hi,

Can you do a screenshot of the mixer window?

There doesn't seem to be a way to attach a graphic to post.

I've been able to push Maxim over the limit from other tracks in a lot of other mixes, so I've been assuming that Maxim is a soft limiter. However, the inconsistency is that I cannot push Maxim over the limit by lowering the threshold.

To post a screenshot you need a host server to put up your shots, something like this;
https://www.box.net/signup/h

Setup a free personal account.

In windows if you hit the Ctrl/Prt-SysRq keys simultaneously you capture a screenshot of whatever is on your screen. Go to Start>open Windows Paint app and hit Ctrl V to paste the shot into paint. Save the shot and upload it into your boxnet account and get a link to the screenshot.

Paste the link into your thread on here. Hope this is of some help.
