Well, I'd guess that now, you will see very minimal development for DP. I'd almost guarantee Digi scrapped whatever plan they were working on to support the DP machines. Personally, I'd just go with one of the older, G4/500 single processor units or similar. No reason to spend the extra bucks on a DP model with minimal gains.

Sorry bout that. I was wrong. They are still offering a dual G4/533 machine. Must have been what you meant.

If OSX really puts the OS tasks on omne processor and leaves the other for applications, then any of the DP machines should outperform a single processor model....but I want proof first.

First, PTLE will have to run on OSX.

I would love some sort of statement from Digidesign, I'm a 450dp owner.

....do you think we'll see one?

I think one of the biggest changes here is the faster bus speed. I would bet that these new G4's scream. If your going to spend a lot of money on a computer, might as well get the best and most recent computer you can afford. The 001 bases all of its power off of the processor so it seems like a no brainer to invest in the newest thing if you can afford it. I am. Hopefully there are not any incompatability issues! It would not suprise me.

the dual g4 500's would more than likely be faster than the 733 under osx and with altivec support only. but with the new g4's your getting an extra pci slot and 133mhz system bus, so it's like any other computer comparison. it depends on many factors. scsi or ide, amount of ram, extensions, i mean perfromance is going to vary from system to system that'll never change.

I tried it in a G4/533 single 4-slot machine. It seemed to work very well. Wait of course for Digi to approve it. I was able to add 4 instances of RealVerb to the "Be There" demo track (one in place of the slap delay, plus 3 more) before the meters began to slow down. It seemed to very comfortably run 3 instances added into the session. I haven't tried adding instances until it stopped - but I'd guess at 4, maybe 5 RealVerbs.

That's a nice improvement over my 450 DP.
